Not wanting to sound judgemental (and definitely not wanting to start a moral
crusade), but a little question for any Americans concerning something that
scared me when I was in the States a few months ago.

I was in a k-mart (which is basically a supermarket selling
food, clothes, toys etc), when I came across a section selling
guns. Now, I don't consider myself particularly anti-gun or
anything, but seeing them for sale in (what I presume is) a typical
supermarket, scared the shit out of me. I think I suffered a bit too much
culture shock, and I didn't pay too much attention to what sort of guns they
were.

Is this common? Are they typically just low powered guns? I'm sort of morbidly
curious.

Nope, they're the real McCoy - but at Kmart you will find a lot of BB
guns and target shooting equipment as well

Guns for sale in the US "over the counter" fall into two categories:

1)Hunting weapons (Shotguns, Rifles up to .30-06 calibre)
2)Handguns (anything up to and including.45 Magnum)

Most states require some form of paperwork and waiting period to purchase a
weapon. There are restrictions against felons owning firearms as well in most
states. If you have a clean record and complete a course in Florida you can be
issued a permit for carrying a concealed weapon as well. Without special
collector's licenses you cannot purchase fully automatic weapons. (Although as
you may be
aware that it is simple to modify a semi-auto to a full aoto weapon
in many cases)

Sam,

Well, that's pretty common around here, though K-Mart isn't really a
supermarket type of operation. They are like Wal-Mart or Target(I'm sure
you've heard of one of those). And all 3 of those stores carry guns, both
handguns, and rifles, including shotguns. Most of what they sell is your
typical hunting gear. The handguns are home defense types. I'm not sure of how
high powered some of it is. We love our guns here. After all, any idiot with a
drivers lisence and 7 days to wait can buy an arsenal(and some have criminal
records too, even though they aren't suupposed to be able to buy them). And
you wonder why people die so often of gunshot wounds over here?

K-Mart isn't quite a supermarket.... it's more of an "uber"market. if
you had a small town in the middle of nowhere, its only store might well be a
kmart or a walmart. Its sort of like the general stores of old, only bigger.

Although, I will admit I was a bit taken aback the first time I saw it as
well...

Speaking as an American. Yes, is is all too common. No, they are not low
powered guns. You can find anything from high powered hunting rifles,
shotguns, revolvers and automatic pistols. These are not some grocery
store variety, these are the real things. Wal-Mart, a store that is the
same as K-mart except a different color, just recently stopped selling
handguns, when a patron purchased a gun at their store and 30 minutes later
killed a few people. Welcome to America. Its our constitutional right to
"keep and bear arms" and kill anyone who pisses us off. We only kill
20,000 people a year with them. I'm not particularly anit-gun either,
but I live here and it makes me sick.

This is normal for K-Mart. If want a real shock, check out a gun and
knife show sometime. They have these about every couple of months or so in our
area. You have wall-to-wall firearms, related merchandise, and scary
looking red necks with some extra cash to spend. Here, you can find anything
from handguns to assault rifles and books on how to make explosives from items
in your kitchen.

As typical for me when I open my mouth about my political leanings,
but ... it /doesn't/ scare you to see the people ostensibly 'in
Authority' who have control of M-16's, MLRS artillery, F-117 fighters
and literal armies of nicely brainwashed soldiers kept in check only by the
thought that imposing complete martial law might be opposed by 'scary looking
rednecks with some extra cash to spend'? It doesn't frighten you to know that
the criminal element doesn't buy guns through the corner gun shop or gun show,
he gets them through
street-contacts /and he gets a better price on them than you do/? It
doesn't bother you to think that someone could waltz into your place of
business at any time, and put a bullet in the head of every person they come
across until the cops show, maybe up to an hour later?

Give me free concealed carry in every state and the social mandate that you
should own a gun and be trained to operate it responsibly, anyday.

Yeah, that damned Constitution. Nothing but trouble. Don't worry. They'll tear
it up right after you take guns away from all the good people you don't
understand at all (that would be those scary rednecks who fight in your
armies, work in your mines, and harvest your crops).

For the record, not one right flows from the Constitution. It guarantees them;
it does not and cannot grant them.

In short, Mr.Williams, watch what you say about the members of the US Armed
Forces, acitve, reserve or former. I'm sure there are plenty of former
servicemen on this mailing list, whether US, Canuck, Brit, Aussie, Kiwi or
what not. Please keep future statements about servicemen respectful. Just a
heads-up. I'm not saying you can't hold your views, just think about
your target audience in the future. Now, let's put this behind us and get on
to
discussing some game-related issues.

They (K-Mart) use to sell guns in Australia, but they stopped when we
desided that it would be fun to have some real chaos liek the USA, and they
withdrew them from sale (it was THEIR desision from memory, they where legal
gunsmiths due to NSW at least. It use to p*ss a my Cub Scout leader, as he had
a gunshop down the road....)

Correction: the figures above listed are for accidental firearms deaths only.
I misread the data. An unforgivable mistake on my part. In any event please
disregard this entirely as this has no place in this group.
 I
apologize for getting caught up in the heat of the subject.

Based on your rhetoric above, this seems very silly. Why would anyone need to
carry a concealed handgun if everyone operated them responsibly?
