Hi all, I was wondering how to classify motorcycles in Dirtside II and
StargruntII? Are they just size 1 vehicles? Are they low or high mobility
wheeled vehicles? Also, in Dirtside II, does anybody mount the motorcycles in
pairs or are they used singly? I would like to know so that I can convert my
epic squats to dirtside use. Thanks Chris Herkowski

When I designed some bikes, I think I made 'em size 0.6 vehicles, mostly
because I didn't want to give them much space. Lessee here, what did I come up
with....

Bike Size class 0.6 (VSP 3) Armour rating 0 (VSP 3, BVP = 3) CFE (BVP x.2 =
0.6 => 1, total cost = 4) High mobility wheeled (BVP x.3 =.9 => 1, tc = 5)

RFAC/1 costs 5 points (tc = 10), and a front 180 mount takes 3 of 3
capacity A basic firecon costs 2 pts (tc = 12)

So, there it is. Note that I don't really think the bike would have a turret
mounted gun, but I'm using a turret mount to simulate the maneuverability of
the bike. Alternately, use a size 0.4 vehicle and a fixed mount. Either way, I
don't think the bike should keep the 360 degree APSW.

Good choice of army, there. ^_^ Personally, I'm just keeping them
mounted double, though if I paint any more I'll do what I did with my Trikes:
cut them off the rectangular "base" (so you can get at the underside), and
simply pin them (without glue) to the square Epic base. That way you can
"dismount" them if needed, and (IMO) they look cooler.

Trikes, BTW, I'd like to make a size 1.2 vehicle (to fit a class 2 weapon).
Bleah... the bikes were originally fixed mount, but Andy Skinner pointed out
the firing restrictions placed on same... ie, fire before you move. Perhaps
that would be a nice optional upgrade for fixed mounts, to allow you to ignore
that restriction? Or maybe just allow light vehicles to do so, to reflect on
their maneuverability....

Given the size of ATVs of most stripes and the fact that they're typically not
used 'on the fly' (trying to use your rifle while riding hellbent over
terrain is /not/ recommended), I'd simply define them as a different
kind of infantry, 'mounted (dispersed).' When in 'travel mode' they're treated
as one step easier to hit but move as if one step better in mobility. If
they want to do serious infantry-style work, they have to dismount,
giving them usual mobility but also the usual chances to hit and be effective.

Depends on how you want to arrange their strategic use; if the ATV mobile
infantry operate as special recon teams, two per stand is right. If you
have fire teams that travel by ATV, you'll want 4 - 6.

In SGII I use motorcycles as an individual unit mainly as I use them as recon
vehicles or in one scenario as a courier! Haven't quite thought of a situation
to parallel the Japanese push bike battalions of WWII yet! I
use them as Hi-Mob wheeled, size 1, armour d6 as other vehicles.

For combat if a hit is scored I use a 1d6, 1,2 the rider is hit and 3-6
the bike. Then for damage treat as normal vehicle hits; any damage to the bike
has a potential risk of injury to rider as well.

So what we have here are 'Mechanized Dragoons', almost. (Historical Note for
those who don't know: Dragoons were Napoleonic era & earlier troops that
travelled by horse but dismounted to fight on foot as light infantry.)

This sounds pretty cool. There's a version of this, using GEV skimmers, in
Jon's Hammer's Slammers rules - the inf. move as slow GEVs when 'mounted
up' and are more vulnerable to fire, then dismount using the APC rules to
fight. A counter is placed on the table to represent the parked skimmers, and
to regain their GEV mobility, the inf. have to walk back to the skimmers and
remount.

So motorcycle dragoons are a lower-tech version of the above - and a
very cool idea.

And for those of us who don't want to consort with the devi..I mean GW,
there are other sources of 6mm motor/dirt bikes - Scotia MicroModels
makes
some, in their Neutral/Modern/WW2 line.

According to Mike Elliott, if the bike mounts a weapon or carries a passenger
then it is a size 1 vehicle, otherwise it is a form of cavalry.

Hence a bike with a sidecar is a size 1 vehicle. A bike with an APSW is a size
1 vehicle. (Obviously not using the full 5 capacity points!)

A bike with just a rider is a form of cavalry.

This seems to make sense, and works okay for DSII. I'm not sure what to do
about SGII.

Cheers,
