I think its a bad idea. Small vehicles already gain the benefit of their
target die based on their size. Adding to this makes small vehicles far more
powerfull, and I've already beaten up my opponents with speeder
bikes...
Additionally the earlier comment on the granularity of the game system already
beats this into the ground. You are talking about an area that is much larger
than the vehicles being covered in trees etc...
Hi All,
I played Dirtside II last week with a couple of people who hadn't played
before, and one of them came up with an interesting question: Why don't
smaller vehicles get better protection than larger vehicles from being in
cover?
I assumed that the "add a d6 defense die for soft cover, and a d8 for hard
cover" rule was made for the sake of keeping it simple, but it got me
thinking: why not use the size of the vehicle to determine the size of the
defense die given? If you ignore the effects of stealth systems, then the
defense die of the vehicle would look like this:
Vehicle Defense Die Defense Die Size Soft Cover Hard Cover

Mainly because it makes no sense.
There is X amount of cover; given the scale at which we're working and the
granularity of the system, it makes no sense to say a vehicle that differs in
SIZE as little as do one class from the next does gets
/significantly/
more protection from the same cover. An entire die class is quite a bit,
statistically, even moreso at the lower ranges that small-SIZE vehicles
inhabit.

This sounds good - varied cover by size of vehicles is something that
occured to me, but I never have done anything with it - and now I've
been saved the trouble. I'll try them out when I next play, which won't be for
a couple of weeks, and let you know how the rules work.

I see your point -- changing a whole die type for each size class gives
a significant advantage to the defender.
On the other hand, I don't see how a SuperHeavy Tank can get the same degree
of protection from light woods that a Jeep can.

Hint: Park deeper in.
In order for forrested areas to show up in a 1:300-scale game, we're
talking some fairly deep and intense wooded area. Park the tank deeper in than
the tank and you'll be easily as covered.
