John - Can you send me the link off-list? I'd like
to give it a read if it's a credible source.
Thanks,
That isn't the StrategyPage article is it?
The stuff I've sent John has a better provenance than that.

I guess John means this one:
http://www.unc.edu/depts/diplomat/AD_Issues/amdipl_17/
articles/deatkine_arabs1.html
Seems quite credible, apparently the author has quite a bit of experienc in
Arab countries.
One point to keep in mind is that many of the problems he discusses are not
specifically Arab, but can also be found in other 3rd World countries, e.g. in
Africa, Latin America or the Balkans. Also, other countries in the past have
overcome similar problems and developed their economies, politics and military
forces.

You mean this one:
http://www.strategypage.com/dls/articles/20020909.asp
That one reads like a summary of the one here:
http://www.unc.edu/depts/diplomat/AD_Issues/amdipl_17/articles/deatkine_
arabs1.html
And the strategypage.com article is dated 2.Sept.2002, whereas the other one
is from 1999.
Hardly a stellar moment for Internet journalism.

The Strategy Page version reads like a simplistic, frankly bigoted summary of
the actual article.
The real thing is a pretty good article, raising some good points while
avoiding the simplistic traps the SP summary gets bogged down in. It's well
worth reading.

The StratPage version? Agreed.
