Well Rounded Fleet? (FT)

Subject: Well Rounded Fleet? (FT)

Could anyone suggest what elements to use to make up a Full Thrust fleet? What
I'm looking for here is a well rounded fleet that would allow me to play most
scenarios that folks can come up with while still maintaining the minimal
number of starship miniatures.

I don't want to run out and buy 3 of every FT ship (sorry, Jon!!), it would
break me and my marriage <grin>.

Thanks,

Well, I typically buy for each of my fleets (this is numbers of each class,
not packs):

4 FF 4 DD
2 ea. CL, CE/CM, CA
1 or 2 ea. BC and BB 1 BDN 1 SDN 1 ea. CVL, CV Enough Fighters to equip the
fleet (possibly using some from a general supply, so as long as I have enough
in total, I don't necessarily care about them being the official types).

That might be more than you care to strain your marriage (or your bank
balance) by getting <g>, but that's what I do. I have some fleets
from non-GZG mini ranges that don't have carriers, and others that are
missing some of the ships listed above for all sorts of reasons, and some that
have more than the basic list, again for all sorts of reasons
-- I might like a particular mini so much that I want more than one of
them, or I might have come up with an idea for a conversion (like my NAC DN,
made from bits of a CVL and an SDN).

Then, too, classes are not set in stone -- or, as Jon would be the
first to agree, shouldn't be. A CE, for instance, could be used as a CL, CA or
even a BC or BB if it's convenient; or a FF as a DD (or vice versa). Some
people think size differential is important, some don't; it's a matter of
individual taste. As long as you have enough ships that can act as whatever
you want them to be, relax and get on with the game.

It depends in large part on what kind of fleet you want and what fits in with
your history. If you're playing a colony with 5 million people, you
probably don't really have 36 SDN--more like a CL, a few frigates and
destroyers, and a batch of corvettes.

If you havent gotten around to making a
history-of-a-nation-that-isn't-yet-another-a-NAC-breakaway, and if
you're using GZG ships, look at the specials on www.gzg.com and pick, say, a
battlegroup pack and a carrier pack (30pounds, roughly US$45), or the
megapack (50pounds/$75)--the VAT discount and the shipping charge are
about the same, in my experience, but YMMV.

Or, emphasizing "low bottom line", you might start with something like 4 DD, 6
CL and 4 CA (per side). When you want to run a scenario with heavier ships,
just designate what you have as being a couple of size classes larger ("that
looks like a Jerez but it's really a Jeanne d'Arc").

IMHO, though, you're better off as far as paint time (and shipping charges) to
get a few large sets of ships instead of just a couple every month.

Another thing to remember is that with Full Thrust, balanced fleet design is
frequently a matter of weapon fits which is independant from the miniatures
themselves.

For instance, a fleet without a powerful ADFC-equipped
escort is raw meat, but it can be the same cruiser miniature which as a
different configuration sports three Pulse Torpedo tubes and makes up your
secondary battleline.:)

Size differential is important WITHIN your fleet.

It doesn't matter if your FFs are bigger than my DDs, or if your CEs are
smaller than my DDs.

It DOES matter if those Ypres-class miniatures I'm
shooting at turn out to be corvettes and the
Athena-class miniatures that I've been ignoring for
the past three turns turn out be Jeane d'Arc-class
carriers.

That is very similar to my buying pattern, though I try to go a little
higher on the CLs and smaller if I can (3-4 CL, 4-6 DD, etc) Again it
all depends on what is available for that fleet.

G'day,

Warren asked:

We've found the Nic at Eureka's starter packs are a pretty good start:

BB CH 2 CL 4 FF

Cost in Aussie dollars = $35 which is $18 US or there abouts (though doesn't
include postage... this is also without the Aussie GST of 10%, which you
wouldn't have to pay anyway being outside Australia and all I guess). In the
past Nic has also swapped out the BB for a CV of comparable size if you asked
nicely;)

We all started by getting this a couple of destroyers (about $8 Aussie for a 2
pack) and a SDN or CV (about $20 Aussie).

Cheers
