All of the talk about the leadership of the '1' rollers club has appeared to
die down, but if ballots are still being cast, put my name in the race.

Saturday, playing Stargrunt, I had a squad of power armor have horrendous luck
with the dice.

The power armor had managed to close to short range against an enemy tank.

My opponent rolled a four.

My power armor (rolling five dice, three
multi-launcher packs at d8, IAVR at d10 and quality
die at d8) rolled three 1s, a three and a four.

Minutes later, a squad of regulars hunkered down in hard cover took a casualty
from medium range rifle fire. It was their first casualty of the game and they
needed to beat a three on their quality die. Of course, I roll a 1 on a d8 and
drop two confidence levels from steady to broken, effectively taking them out
of the game.

Just to show that my lack of "dice skill" isn't limited to Stargrunt, playing
soldiers companion last weekend, I had a company of British infantry advancing
on Martian trenches.

On the first round of fire, the Martians gain one potential hit. On the roll
to see if it is an officer, I roll a 1, making it the Army Commander, attached
to that platoon. He dies... but the Brits still carry the day.

These aren't isolated incidents... I can roll a 1 at any time and under any
conditions. My string of 1s continued late into the night as my girlfriend and
I played Tribond (a trivia game).

Personally, I believe there are plenty of "Real Life" situations that can
mimic the effects of bad dice in a miniatures game.

Such as, and this is rarely if ever truly represented on table, maybe the sun
was setting behind my opponents in each game. That could account for some poor
performance. Maybe the troops just weren't ready to fight that day.

Or maybe they're just unlucky.

Or maybe, just maybe, I need to buy new dice ;-)

Sunday I was playtesting one of my GenCon scenarios. I had a grav
anti-aircraft vehicle with twin GMS/H launchers fire at a VTOL gunship.
It hit the gunship and caused a crash landing. The gunship moved 20 inches...
and crash landed on the launcher vehicle. Both vehicles were taken out in one
swell foop. Now, I KNEW they would end up dueling... I just didn't expect them
to take each other out!

Regaling tales of woeful outcomes....

Last club game we had an incident in a game:

Squad of Regular ESU Inf Close Assaulted a squad of Veteran OU in a
building...

OU shift die up one in first round of combat so are rolling d12 vs d8... OU
are 9 figures to ESU 7.... Not unexpectedly the ESU lost 5 casualties to the
OU 2.... ESU rolled an 8 on a d8 and passed their Conf Check... the OU rolls a
1 on d10!! Needed a 4 or better to pass......

RESULT....OU break off falling to BROKEN, ESU roll for casualties and
recovered 4 from STUNNED!!!

Very sad day indeed. Seemed unfair to the OU player but there you
go.....

Cheers,

G'day Owen,

> Regaling tales of woeful outcomes....

My worst SG one yet would be...

Started game by pulling all green 3s (thankgod they took the yellows out)
Rolled a 1 for EVERY confidence and reaction test Had at least half my dice
roll 1 in every fire (the other half got 2 or
3)

So I pretty much spent the game running around shotting myself in the foot
until my ever loving opponent dropped the building I was cowering in on my
head!

On the bright side I did capture 3 humans and a cow to interegate, should've
been 6 humans but the rescue party sent to save them managed to rack up two
kills (he wasn't quite so ecstatic when he realised who coped the kills).

On a related issue, anyone know where I can get some decent looking 'saucers'
(I'd like a vehicle for my little guys).

Cheers

Beth

The kitchen cupboard? There are several types of plate that look about right;
it's just a matter of how big you want them...

I think the request was for SG scale, right? Otherwise, there were saucers
with blister cockpits in the Space Master/Silent Death line, but I'll be
jiggered if I can recall names.

My assumption is that saucers in 'The kitchen cupboard?' might well be too
flat, but plenty of hard plastic bowls of weird and wonderous shapes in
'thrift shops' here in the US. Take plastic cases from gum ball machine prizes
for cockpits, and you're half way there.

By the way, 'thrift shops' refer to the usually charity resellers of household
discards. If you'd care to explain different terms in Oz or the UK for that,
gumball, or even 'cockpit' OFF LIST, I'd consider it a kindness.

I still use Alan's example of being in a meeting asking for a 'rubber' as
a sterling example of the non-unity of the English language. ;->=

I've seen, but not been able to buy :-(, the Scotia saucers.
They look decent.

There is also the Vree Xill saucers from Agents of Gaming. They are large,
2.5" diameter and look quite good. They will be doing a smaller one in the
near future.

There is also the Smite Ship from Star Blazers and a saucer in the Silent
Death line of ships.

Enjoy, Tom Granvold <thomas.granvold@eng.sun.com>

John,

Thanks. I have a thing for flying saucers, especailly since I recently watched
Mars Attacks again. I love that opening titles with all those saucers on the
way to earth. My address is (I use work so that packages don't sit outside my

I think a number of companies do 1/300-ish scale saucers. Try Silent
Death and other figures.

If you're looking for a Stargrunt saucer, you could always kitbash them. It
shouldn't be that hard to find plastic bowls or something that could be glued
together to make flying saucers.

I know Testors did a traditional flying saucer model a couple of years ago,
but that might be TOO big.

I just mentioned this elsewhere: Stan Johansen does a series of
saucer-shaped tanks. Two sizes, big and small, and the smaller tanks

sort -- the undersides are all equipped with one or more fans.

It was 1/48th scale, and I still regret not buying it when I had the
chance. I never saw it open, so I can't swear that it would have worked with
25mm...but it would have been close enough. And it looked quite nice. Mine
would have seen more RPG use than wargaming, but still.... Realistically, of
course, it would still be sitting in the box, unassembled, next to my Horizon
Aliens Dropship and my Testors Robotech models. Someday, though. Someday.
