Subject: WARNING - ON TOPIC - INDEPENDANCE DAY

Just to try and bring something related to playing with toy soldiers to the
list here is an alternate background.

Independance Day/Gulf War 2
After the destruction of the Alien mother ship in the movie Independance Day
not all of the Aliens were destroyed. Some fled to certain third world
countries that would have them, notably Iraq. This sets the stage for the Gulf
War2. This will give you a chance to use your modern armour figures
with some Sci-Fi stuff.

Aliens I figure the aliens would be represented by fighters, power armour and
walkers. The aliens would still have their force fields but these would not be
as powerful as in the movies because in the meantime counters had been
developed by examining captured vehicles ( ie if we coat our rounds with a
non-conductor they have a 50/50 chance of passing through the force
field)

Iraq Would have pretty much the military it has today, I am sure some list
members can give some ideas of TOE with some Alien technology added
(T-72
with force field). For game purposes, consider that Iraq and some of it's
allies were not hit as hard as the western powers because they were not seen
as a big threat, so suddenly it's military has become the big fish by default.

The West During the initial Alien assault, western powers were badly damaged
and much of their best weapons and equipment were destroyed. So going into the
gulf they are bringing in second line troops and equipment (M60's instead of
Abrams) also some minor allies that escaped the notice of the Aliens now have
some of most undisrupted units ( Denmark, Canada etc) and have become major
players. The allies would also be making use of captured Alien
equipment and modifyng their equipment (M113-L the new and improved apc
with laser pintal mount)

These are just some ideas to hopefully give some new scenarios and hopefully
not degenerate into another flame war. That way you can have the US coast
guard taking on Alien grav tanks trying to attack Florida from Cuba.

Oh please. This would never happen, as any *true* student of geopolitics
should- oh, wait, sorry, not used to on topic posts :). Seems like an
interesting idea, but one thing the film seems to indicate is that the air
forces (the only branch that could really even take the fight to the aliens)
were beaten up pretty badly. Even if you assume that the bases stateside (or
island-side if you Brits prefer :) were smacked pretty hard, the US
would still have quite a bit of equipment cached in other areas of the world,
including the Third World area you're speaking of. IIRC, we cached some gear
in either S.A. or Kuwait after the Gulf War so as not to have to haul it all
back there. I also wonder how the Israelis would fare right now ("Merkava
tanks for everyone!!!"). Still, I like the idea, and may have to give it a go
one of these here days.

G'day,

Nice idea, just one thing...

> The West

I have this feeling that I saw/read somewhere that the aliens had
smashed up places like Australia (just not on day one). I have a feeling it
was in the novelisation, but I'm not a 100% sure I even read the novelisation
so I could be typing complete crap here;)

Anyways like I said nice idea... Lachy is gonna love this one!;)

AND who eeps the Iraqis from over runing tese forward US "trip wire" units and
forward deployment stashes in SA and Kuwait?

somehow i do not see either SA or Kuwaitis holding the Iraqis off with no
first world help on the way, and aliens to give the Iraqis extra OOMPH!

sooo, write off those "tripwire units" and forward pre-deployed arms,
ammo, vehicles, and other stuff.

also the real world militaries are gonna be real busy dealing with aliens in
Cuba and other places (Balkans, anyone? can you say Chechnya?) closer to home.

so you will have the Gulf states. India, Pakistan, and maybe Turkey dealing
with Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan!

Israel will be up to its ass in traditional enemies, possibly with aliens
helping Syrians, some Lebanese, the PLO. maybe Jordan, and Egypt.

i think you have set the stage for multiple mushroom clouds forming
over a number of anti-social states in the third world since
basically this is a fight for the survival of the human race against
traitors and aliens....

You are probably right about the mushroom clouds but in my scenarios I would
use a plot device or PSB to negate the nuclear threat. Something along the
lilnes of nuclear dampers like traveller or maybe an alien threat to use a
planet killer device if threatened with nuclear extinction.

This would give interesting SG scenarios Destroy the planet killer, Knock out
the damper so we can nuke their power core etc. I like the idea of some Tac
nukes still available but not being sure if they will work.
