Subject: VTOLs again

Hello all,

I have initiated my search for the models to do my conversion. I ran into a
stumbling block. What scale should I shoot for if I'm shooting for a 15mm
scale. I'm not trying to start another arguement of what measures for scale. I
am just asking those who have done this, (Jaime you stand out) what scale
models they used. I need a Hind and an Osprey
for what I have in mind, possibly an A-10.

Any thoughts.

Eli

I think it depends entirely on what the relative size of the landing ship or
VTOL you mean to create by kit-bashing. The Hind is available in 1:144,
1:72
and in larger scales. The A-10 is available in 1:72, and larger for
sure. I think you can find cast metal models in the toy aisle in a scale
closer to 1:144. I have never seen a 1:72 or smaller Osprey model, but have
seen ii in 1:48. (Micro Machines has an Osprey in one of its packs that is
great for the 6mm Battletech games I run occasionally, but that is way too
small for
15mm). If you plan to kit-bash using the cast metal toys, you had better
have a Dremel tool.

It's technically underscale for 15mm stuff, but for aerospace/VTOL stuff
that's less important, esp. for the gunships that never land. And there's
a fairly good range of 1/144 kits out there.

1/100 would be near-perfect, but there's practically nothing made in
that
scale - I've only ever seen a very, very small range.

1/72 is big, but for a large transport or dropship a 1/72 model might be
a starting point.

1/87 (HO model railroad scale, also called OO in the UK) is smaller than
1/72 - if you can find stuff it'll work, but air vehicles aren't the
point of HO models...

Feel free to drop me a line if you've got any questions,

As often the case, this is from what I've started, but not finished.

Firstly, there was(is?) a 1/72 Osprey from Ertl. Mine may become an
aerial
hunter-killer ala Terminator; the wing root is ok. So, a bit big, but if
you populate the cockpit with more than two cramped crew, would work.

The 1/72 F117 Nitehawk, with clipped wings, would make a great drop
ship, though you might wish to add something to the under belly. (Hmm... I
guess that's OT)

I think the 1/144 Hind is a bit small, at least, thin-bodied, but I
crammed
some EE(tm) figs into a 1/72 that didn't look half bad, so consider it a
possibility, though the squat pilot had his legs snipped to get in the
cockpit, which was sliced from a bubble to a wind screen. I think the Havoc
and Apache would look small, but if your VTOL is flying above, with a small
pilot, you can afford to mix scales a bit. Ask Colonel Tremordan.

Not quite, 1/87 scale is HO, 3.5 mm to the foot scale, and the british
system is OO, 1/76 scale at 4 mm to the foot. The HO comes from Half O
gauge (which is 7 mm to the foot).

OO isn't a scale, it's an abomination!

(For the benefit of people who haven't been lucky enough to be railway
modellers, OO stock is made to run on HO-size tracks - i.e. the tracks
are the wrong scale width.)

Here's an odd and cheap thougth (spot the student!)

If you're in the states (or anywhere not British for that matter), then I
don't know whether you have an equivalent to "The Pound Shop" or "Price
Pounder" or any other shop that sells everything at a pound. They are usually
full of all sorts of overpriced rubbish. BUT Yesterday I picked up a
couple of 25mm helicopters (they are wind up and everything! :-D) at 2
for a pound. They go with my light and sound Humm V's with gun turrets in my
"I
will modify and paint these guys" draw.

Watch out for my 'excuse to use VTOL' scenario that I'll post up about later

Just a thought, not as pretty, but if you're gonna stick things/hack
bits off, £1 is not very expensive.
