Thanks for the info Brendan, though it is way overkill for what I needed:)
All I wanted was to make it possible to engage enemy VTOLs and fighters which
are over the DS2 board. That is to say, if my tank killer VTOL is hovering
slamming tanks into mush, he'd like to have some defence when the aerospace
fighter comes in to kick his butt. A little 18"
range Stinger or a 36" GMS/L-AA will do just
fine.
And FWIW, Interface capable elements may be priced at 1000%, but that's
insane. Just because my VTOL has aerospace movement (ie its the dropship from
aliens) in that it comes in from orbit, that doesn't make it any more potent
over the battlefield. I think you have to consider what the unit can do on the
battlefield and not be a slave to points <not that you were implying that>. If
it acts like a VTOL (in most respects) but brings troops in from orbit (which
isn't any different from a faraway base as far as the game board goes), then I
should probably cost it like a VTOL.
And FWIW, a normal size 5 VTOL can carry a size 3 MBT if I recall correctly,
so a tank carrying lander isn't necessarily larger than the game scale. It
just means you need a bunch of them to land a unit of tanks. If it was landing
little jeeps, it could probably land 2 or 3 of them per lander.
Thanks for the Info. I also liked the DFO for SG2. I did a conversion for
SLAMs that I use for my Aliens Dropships, but I didn't have one for DFO yet.
Now if only the only online DS2 vehicle designer of which I am aware didn't
spitback internal server errors all the time, I could do vehicle design much
quicker....

Make sure you're using the new location. I moved the main page, thinking that
was enough, but some people had the generator bookmarked directly.

Within a single DSII game, perhaps, and there should probably be a BIG
difference between drop-capable, one-way and the round-trip varieties,
but it does make 'ballpark' sense in campaigning to me.
While I've read the the FTII/DSII sections in the FTII books, this
discussion has given this poor vac-head some much needed insight towards
the planetary operational system that's been rolling 'round my brain.
However, I'm wondering if you are using the VTOL's as landers, ground support,
AND air superiority, or if there's different VTOL's with different
capabilities?

That probably depends on what kind of force you're planning for.
For example, the current DSII force that I'm planning is a high-tech
intervention force (actually, it's a combined arms force, with a particular
configuration of FT spacecraft and attached ground forces). The force is,
overall, somewhat reminiscent of a cross
between "Aliens", _A Small Colonial War_, the Arkadic marines from
_Exordium_, and assorted others in smaller amounts. The ground force
is actually entirely based on VTOL's, and (at least in the universe I'm
using), these VTOL's have interface capability (somewhat like
Renegade Legion grav tanks, or Traveller Air/Rafts or (I think) Grav
Tanks). The force is thus a (relatively) small force composed of VTOL
gunships, APC's (carrying powered armour), VTOL engineering (and command)
vehicles, VTOL Artillery (not RAM artillery, even though it
SHOULD be usable by grounded VTOL's, I was using rocket-based
artillery), VTOL cargo ships, etc. The force had 2 interface landers (to
recover disabled VTOLs). Some of the VTOLs may end up carrying APCs (grav or
hover) instead of PA for whatever purposes, but I'm not sure yet.
The idea of this force is a quick, largely self-sufficient reaction
force, to be used in a universe where as long as you're transporting mass, you
may as well get the BEST possible technology, because the major cost is in the
transportation.
That's one example of why VTOL's may be used. Does it answer any questions, or
just raise more?
In Rot Hafen there is a squadron of Pterodactyl-D aerospace attack
fighters that are supporting the ground force. The Pterodactyl's do have
interface (or aerospace) capabilities. However the aerospace module requires
carrying of less payload. It is a VTOL fighter attack aircraft, single seat,
capable of operating from forward unimproved fields (while carrying a higher
payload than if ut was launched from orbit.) It carries about 10 tons of a2g
stores in internal and external hardpoints not including the internal RFAC and
internal bays for A2A stores. I think the premise it it'll probably be a
little cheaper to have ground based aircraft if you can swing the logistics
and security end of things.
