The first book was written in 1968 (before me, but my husband's of the correct
vintage for that).
And the series was first run in the 1970s (that I can vouch for - had me
enchanted).
Fraggle Rock also made it to Australia (another grand show) - except it
went to the commercial channels and so got bounced around a bit more than the
dependable wombles (which were on our national broadcaster).
In my opinion, definitely a damn side better than the current run of "Green"
cartoons based on this Captain Planet joker!
Now in a vain attempt to bring this thread anywhere near on topic... With all
this talk of customised minor powers and the UN etc. I have
actually considered cobbling together a set of ships out of spare/old
bits and giving them Womble like names. After all there's nothing quite like
the look on an overly serious opponent's face when you take a barage of enemy
fire and then proclaim "Oh No! You've just killed Uncle Bulgaria you fiend!"
Something based on Fraggle Rock may prove more difficult as you'd have to stop
the Fraggles eating the ships as fast as the Doozers made them!
OK this has got far too silly:)

Then you'll be pleased to know THEY ARE BACK!
ITV in UK have just completed showing a 12 episode new series made by HTV and
CINCAR (?). Includes all the old characters plus some new ones
including a "trndy/cool" girl (!), a black womble and a chinese one (oh
and a Scottish one makes an appearance during one episode.
Picket your local TV station - you know it makes sense!

What about the glorious Clangers?!
Did they make it round the world too? (Aside- a friend of mine had a
Clanger, knitted by her mum, nicked from this very lab last year. A shocking
act of criminality.)
At some near future point I'll reshare my ideas on the "truth" about Clangers
with the list... you have been warned! Rob

They definitely look it:) I think we might have missed out on something big
here:)
If it ran in the late 60's/early 70s then I would've missed them for
sure
(not around/too young), but I doubt they did run as our ABC usually
repeats kids shows to death and I never saw them (pity).
Have fun,

The Clangers were the finest knitted pink aliens in the history of
SF-
look at http://www.clangers.co.uk/ for images etc. They appeared in
about 2
dozen 10 minute shows from the late '60s\early '70s. Other frequent
participants were the Froglets, the Iron Chicken and the Soup Dragon and her
child. Completely charming.

okay folks,
I should take my lumps from JW (he hasn't given me any, but I guess he should)
for this thread. I hadn't realized when I asked what a Womble was I'd start
this maelstrom of OT conversation. Much as I'm one of the few here who could
care less how many OT threads are running, some folk who don't have a T1 into
their mailer probably do. We should probably let this thread die a death
having been so explored lately or start an alt.womble newsgroup. Here's to
getting back OT and letting this one go the way of the dodo....:)
Tom.
