Is there anywhere I can purchase some of the lead miniature starships made by
Valiant? Or are they long "out of print"?
Of all the lead miniatures, these are my personal favorites. Alas, when they
were popular, I was
an empoverished teen-ager, and could not purchase
as many as I wanted.
They did look nice as photographs on the playing
I have heard that Valiant will be reissuing them this year. I agree that they
are nice and I only have about 15 ships of differing types per side.

Valiant's Stardate:3000 line of starships is currently not in production
but they were planning to re-release the line this spring. Last
November, Valiant was in the process of moving their factory to a new location
and
that was delaying the re-relase.
Mike Miserendino, a former list member, has been in contact with Valiant so
I'll ask him for an update.
Welcome to the club! Come, sit over here by all of us old timers, and
spin yarns by the cracker barrel. Well sonny-jim, 'twas in the summer
back in oh, '79 or so... That man Carter waz in the Whitehouse, and a wee lad
strolled up to a counter in a small game store. "What can I get for this much"
he sez to the balding, paunchy man behind the counter, pushing a crumpled
dollar bill and some pennies across the glass. "Lessee here, we have Superior
starship miniatures, Valiant,
Grenadier....."
So many choices, so few crumply bucks. Sigh.
Last I heard we were still waiting for info on the return of Valiant
minis....
In the meantime, you have seen the (new) old Superior stuff? Cheerfully
and efficiently dispensed from http://www.stellargames.com/ even if
your heart is set on the old Valiant minis, you'll get your nostalgia fix on
this'un.

I'll check it out! I have a few of the Superior ships (as well as the
laughably simplistic game they supplied) I've also got a sheet with a color
photo of the ships they painted, they look gorgeous!
I also have a few of the ships made for FASA's StarTrek game. Heck I've got
some of Lou Zocchi's Enterprises and Klingon Battlecruisers. Not to mention
some of the StarFleet Battles Tholian Gorn, and Hydran cruisers. Most
surprising of all, I have a dull miniature that I recognized in the photo in
Full Thrust on page 45, item #5 from Minifigs! As I recall, I got it about
1975...

People playing FT with the Superior ships might want to take a look at the M
Collective page on Superior

Have pity on me; my first sci-fi(sic) games were Zocchi's Alien Space
and Casciano's(sp?) Star Raider and Fomenhault II. Actually, I seem to have
developed a sudden block on the latter two, and am sure I don't quite have
them right. Lovely scale, icky execution. And, let's not even try to recall
War of the, er, um, Star Slavers?
On the other hand, I recall pleasant evenings of dispersed Risk boards
representing separate planets, and simple home-built rules for starship
warfare and troop transport between.
I think it's a longing for those days that keeps me thinking I'd like to run a
campaign using a combinations of FT II, Buck Rodgers board game, and Fortress
America.

Alien Space was a marvelous game! I recall many happy hours nailing my
brother's space ship with a well placed blazer beam. I actually have a copy of
Fomalhaut II, I agree, lovely scale, icky execution. I didn't bother with War
of the Star Slavers.
Alien Space had a nice concept. For those who have never played:
The counters are 5 inches square. They show a drawing of a ship, divided into
a nose, midsection, and tail section. Around the ship is printed a 360 degree
protractor. And at the center of the ship one attaches a six foot lenght of
thread.
You play on the floor. Each ship can move so many inches a turn.
When you fire, you look at the protractor, then call off you shot: "I'm firing
at 45.6 degrees!" You hold the ship while your opponent stretches the line
across 45.6. If the line crosses the enemy ship, you've hit. There are three
different hit result tables, depending on which section of the enemy ship you
hit. Drive and power in the tail, sensor and shields in the mid, etc.
In addition, each ship was from a different race, and had a unique weapon of
their very own. One had missiles, one had tracking mines, one had something
suspiciously like the Romulan plasma sphere, etc.
Facinating game.

Does anyone know much about Star Slavers? I have not heard of it before and
don't have it on my list of spaceship combat games. If it involves spaceship
combat, I'd like to add it, but can use any information I can get. Especially
who producded it and when was it released.
If you would like to see my list, which also includes a list of spaceship
miniatures, the web page can be found at
