Subject: UNSC Ship Names

Having traded cash-plus-Aeronefs with Jon last weekend for the start of
a UNSC fleet, I've started putting them together and (wife, rug-rat and
household chores permitting) hope to get them at least partially painted this
weekend. I failed to take enough notice of the earlier discussions on UNSC
ship naming conventions, so does anyone have a summary of the names on a
website anywhere? Or does someone have a copy of the mails (yes, I know I
could look in the archives but I don't have net access on
my machine here - only e-mail).

I don't think that all the ship classes have been [officially] assigned class
names yet. Those that have been (last I checked) are:

SDN-X: "Sol" class (for the planets, colony worlds, etc)

SDN: "Gaia" class (named after major continents/nations; eg, Africa,
North American, Europe, Asia, Pangea, etc)

BB: "Luna" class (named after moons; eg, Luna, Callisto, Titan, Phobos,
Deimos, etc)

CA: "River" class (named after, well, major rivers!:)

CL: "Mountain" class (named after mountains; there is some discussion going on
about having a seperate 'Volcano' class)

DD: "Lake" class

The basic theme is geological features (more or less). I'm hoping for
a Glacier-class and a Cave-class to show up at some point here. :)

Thanks to all those that have replied - I didn't realise that some of
the class names were still undefined. I'll have to use some artistic licence
/
imagination to fill in the missing classes - in particular I need a name
for a battlecruiser and some frigates. For the battlecruiser I'll probably use
one
of the battleship moon names - after all, there are sixty-plus moons in
the Solar System so that should be enough to go around. As for the frigates,
I'm
not sure ... I might just give them Pennant numbers (FF-001) and leave
it at that.

Thanks all

Subject: UNSC Ship Names

Hi all,

So, as I'm assembling a UNSC fleet, I find that I need ship names. Any
suggestions people can provide for the following classes would be appreciated.

Hermes class Diplomatic Couriers

Warrior class Battle Corvettes

Lawkeeper class Patrol Cruisers

Hunter class Frigates

Bay class Escort Cruisers

Storm class Strike Cruisers

Point class Battle Cruisers

Comet class Escort Carriers

Any suggestions (and reasons for 'em if you got 'em) would be great.

Sounds like Greek gods/heroes, or personas/concepts linked to speed -
Heck, be silly and have a Speedy Gonzales or Flash, with appropriate noseart.

> Warrior class Battle Corvettes
Military commanders - Nelson, Grant, Alexander - or mythological heroes
- Gilgamesh, Hercules, etc

> Lawkeeper class Patrol Cruisers
Defensive or Legalesque names - Warden, Shield, Buckler, etc

> Hunter class Frigates
Mythological hunters/predatory animals?

> Bay class Escort Cruisers
Harbours and Bays - raid your local globe!

> Storm class Strike Cruisers
Easiest of the lot - start with meterology (Hurricane, Typhoon,
Tempest), and move into winds (El Nino, Mistral).

> Point class Battle Cruisers
Once again, raid your local globe.

> Comet class Escort Carriers
Halley, Shumaker-Levy, etc - or make some up, as famous comets from
other systems!

I know 'mericans and Brits will probably hate putting them as names for small
ships, but military leaders of 'peace keeping' forces for
UN-sanctioned actions? Douglas MacArthur, Michael Jackson,...?

Just out of a meeting with managerial types. I can't be expected to think
straight.

I guess I would assume "Hermes" refers to Greek mythology. Hermes (aka

that.

What does Hermes refer to anyways? I doubt if it's really about the store. It
doesn't seem to me that you'd name your Couriers after greek gods, but maybe
it's just me.

> >Lawkeeper class Patrol Cruisers
He he. Yeah, that will be one. I'm thinking we need famous sheriff's and the
like. Who founded Scotland Yard? Wyatt and Virgil Earp? Hammurabi perhaps?

These are good. I need *lot's* of frigate names. Anyone got
non-fictional
hunters? I was going to use Hemmingway. Who else is a famous big-game

hunter?

I was wondering about this. Are their enough storm "types" to use, or would we
need to use the "names" of hurricanes and typhoons instead?

Hermes was the messenger of the gods. You could do a whole series of messenger
gods from various religons. Although "Passenger Pigeon" has an odd appealing
ring to it...

Mistral, Hurricane, Cyclone, Typhoon, White Squall, Tornado, Chinook,

Again, I think this is a wind without the storm part. Though, having
experienced 'em, you FEEL like you're in a hurricane. Santa Anna and Boreas
are the same class, right? Most of the rest I'm not familiar with, though
you've probably heard we in the midwest are TOO familiar with Tornados.

Pheidippides

Love that Google.

As with Hermes, many of these can go a number of ways, but I'd try to keep 'em
UN oriented. There are a fair number of messenger of the Gods. You can
include Judeo-Christian angels, of course. For Warrior-class, the
Warrior that oft pops to mind is the parmored cruiser at Jutland. You could
call them Black Prince and Defence. However, I'm not sure they'd be cherished
as predecessors.

It was trying to keep the UN connection when I offered the other Warrior
suggestions.

Not sure about the UN names for 'messengers'. Envoys? Such as Brahimi?

It's less the size of the guns, but rather the projected size of the ship.
They will have extremely good ECM to make them look bigger or smaller in
certain respects.

Looking through the suggestions to date, it's hard to spot a proper name that
couldn't be construed as another power's property. You want verbs, adverbs and
adjectives as names.

For example, take C J Cherryh's Union ship names; Unity, Amity, Liberty,
Defiance... <googles>

Folks, we've done this before. Check the thread "UN Ship Nomenclature" from
the GZG archives at
http://lists.firedrake.org/gzg

On an irreverant note, let me throw in some

For the record (and feel free to disagree!) I'd always envisaged that
the Couriers would not have "official" names, only pennant numbers -
there are probably a LOT of these boats in service - but that some
might be given "unofficial" names by their crews. The use of Hermes as a model
name was in the messenger sense, and seemed to fit, but there need not be any
mythological connection to any of the unofficial ship names. Many would
probably be named for their
captain's wife/girlfriend/mistress etc (or of course
husband/boyfriend/toyboy for the female captains.....). I suspect
that nose art wouldn't be uncommon.

For the Warrior corvettes, use names of famous (or made-up famous)
soldiers - grunts who have distinguished themselves through the ages.
Like in Starship Troopers, where the Rodger Young (in the BOOK) is
actually a corvette/transport, and it is noted that the little ships
are named for the footsloggers, while the big carriers are named for battles
(eg: the Ypres). Look at any war memorials or roll of honour, and pick some
names that sound good, or just make some up for heroes
of 21st/22nd century battles!.

I'm sorry, but you named the class, now I have to use that! :-) :-)

Actually I've gotten enough messenger god names from online sources to cover
what I'll actually put on the table.

> For the Warrior corvettes, use names of famous (or made-up famous)

Yeah, I'd already started pulling famous generals names out of my head. I'll
have to find Victoria Cross and MOH winners to use as well. I've gotten a
bunch of excellent suggestions. I'll search the old messages for some more,
and compile the list and post it here. I'm tempted to not use "Halley" for the
comet class. It's almost *too* obvious.

May we introduce the new 'WonderWeasel' ECM kit? Takes your standard signature
and pushes it upwards and outwards to appear visibly bigger from all aspects.
Makes your pair of frigates look like a couple of battleships!

Then switch it off, and you 'Wonder' where it's all gone.....

"The Marine Corps Book of Lists" by Albert A. Nofi contains a list of all USMC
MoH winners by date, conflict, and action, as well as a list of all USN
corpsmen who were awarded the MoH for actions while on duty with the USMC.

"The Civil War Book of Lists" by the same author contains similar lists for
the USMC, USA, and USN for the ACW.

You could also use the names of historical warrior types or cultures.
e.g.:
UNS Hoplite UNS Spartan UNS Samurai UNS Archer UNS Highlander UNS Myrmidon UNS
Legionary UNS Velite UNS Hastari UNS Knight UNS Cuirassier UNS Hussar UNS
Cossack

or legendary/mythical warriors
e.g.
UNS Hector UNS Achilles UNS Siegfried UNS Roland UNS 47 Ronin UNS Galahad UNS
Gawain UNS Lancelot UNS Gary Owen

names, I've a file/page I put together and have been slowly adding
to for ship names you can peruse if you'd like.
