I simply created an excel spreadsheet with white number on black backgrounds.

I used the coding N1..N2..N3 etc for the NAC ships, E for the ESU ships etc.

Printed out, cut up and stuck on the black bases with a little bit of glue,
very nice and professional looking results, and actually a lot, lot easier
than painting lots of numbers by hand, especially when you have over 100
ships.

Photos as usual if anyone wants them, but you get the general idea

I did a similar thing, but printed the full ship's name plus national
symbol onto sheets of self-adhesive labels. Each label was designed to
be 4mm high, so that they could be stuck onto 156 thou wide strips of
Evergreen styrene cut to length. These were then stuck to the ship bases. I
find it adds a bit of character to have each ship individually named rather
than just referred to by number.
