In on of the rule books (Fleet book, More Thrust or Full thrust... don't have
any handy ATM) It mentions optionaly using squadron movement to keep
formation. None of the guys i play with care much about the half inch you move
stuff to keep in formation, especialy considering they're all doing the same
thing. Finding out you're losing a ship because your the ship with the
area defence fire con is 1/4 an inch away sucks.

Well, if you're taking a moderate sized line of ships, and 'wheeling' it, one
way or another, it's good deal more than a half an inch. If you're just
keeping the formation together, that would seem to be different than
requested.

Catching a fleet while still trying to deploy can be GREAT fun.

Sorry, all, still haven't tried my ideas for a 'turning point'.

One of the problems with Line Ahead is that you can't really use squadron
movement because your ships are not all doing the same thing
at the same time--that is, if they all turn at the same time, they're
no longer in line ahead.

OTOH, Line Ahead is not a particularly useful formation, since FT ships don't
have the same control and firing arc limitations that WWI ships (and
predecessors) had. You might find that a box or line abreast works better.

If you have your ships in base to base contact, you can use the Squadron
movement rules. Can't remember the page reference, but you write one set of
orders and all ships maintain their formation on the lead ship regardless of
maneuvers. It's usually not used for ships larger than DDs unless it's a
really large game.

Thanks Brendan and all the others who replied. Seems like I should have bought
"More Thrust" for the squadron movement rules which solve the problem.

As well as the age of sail, I remember in at least one episode of "Blakes 7"
the Federation cruisers attacked in a very tight
line ahead formation. Practical or not, I want to try :-)
