Subject: transport designations?

On the subject of fleet ID decals, I'm thinking seriously of expanding the
sheet
to twice the size, hopefully to fit even insane-sized fleets.

If I've got the space, I might as well add transports and the like. So... Can
anyone tell me what good designations would be for the following?

Heavy Freighter Medium Freighter Light Freighter Free Trader Fleet Auxillary
Assault Transport Bulk Carrier Starliner

Thanks

Tom

What would the odds of you slipping some....ohhh...non-EarthForce B5
decals
in the sheet?? ;-) ;-) (no, it's just a whimsy thought, not a serious
one)

I'd try gleaning ideas from designations as given in Jane's Fighting
Ships (or any of those comprehensive-type books). There are some online
listings, too; one of which is on one of the FT FAQs, there's a listing in the
archives, and I put a listing (mainly for my own purposes:) on my fleet roster
page:

Here's the best I can do. I'd favor the historically-based.

> Heavy Freighter

Well, historically, US ships of the following classes used these designations:

Cargo Ships - AK
Attack Cargo Ships - AKA
Net Cargo Ships - AKN
General Stores Issue Ships - AKS
Cargo Ships and Aircraft Ferries - AKV

> Free Trader

It's not a military designation, so why not "FT"? It's not that
close to FFT -
Frigate (Reserve Training)

> Fleet Auxillary

Again, historically:

Crane Ship - AB
Destroyer Tenders - AD
Ammunition Ships - AE
Provision Store Ships - AF
Miscellaneous Auxiliaries - AG
Amphibious Force Command Ships - AGC
MTB Tenders - AGP
Surveying Ships - AGS
Hospital Ships - AH
Net-Laying Ships - AN
Repair Ships - AR
Battle-Damage Repair Ships - ARB
Internal Combustion Engine Repair Ships - ARG
Heavy Hull Repair Ships - ARH
Landing Craft Repair Ships - ARL
Salvage Vessels - ARS
Salvage Craft Tenders - ARS(T)
Aircraft Repair Ships (Aircraft) - ARV(A)
Aircraft Repair Ships (Engine) - ARV(E)
Submarine Tenders - AS
Submarine Rescue Vessels - ASR
Auxiliary Tugs - ATA
Fleet Ocean Tugs - ATF
Old Ocean Tugs - ATO
Rescue Tugs - ATR

> Assault Transport

Transports - AP
Attack Transports - APA
Self-Propelled Barracks Ships - APB
Coastal Transports - APc
High-Speed Transports - APD
Evacuation Transports - APH
Barracks Ships - APL
Mechanized Artillery Transport - APM
Transport Submarine - APS
Aircraft Ferries - APV

> Bulk Carrier

If it's military, it'll probably fit one of the auxillary types mentioned
above. If it's civilian, why not "BC"? Or depending on size, treat them like
the Maritime Commission types: C1, C2, C3, etc.

> Starliner

"SL" appears to be open.

As do I. Thanks to both of you for the lists. Perhaps to keep things simple,
how about the following:

AKH Heavy Freighter
AK Medium Freighter
AKL Light Freighter
FT Free Trader
AG Fleet Auxillary
APA Assault Transport
BC Bulk Carrier
SL Starliner

That at least gives some options for FB based non-combat vessels...

What do you think?

Oops, can't use that one! (BC=Battlecruiser)

Maybe I'll jsut leave it the same code as the Heavy Freigher.

That might not be a bad idea. I missed that one, too. I forgot the FB uses
"BC" for battlecruiser; I use and prefer "CB."

Civilian ships are easy to recognize in FT/MT/FTFB, they have no
weapons/screens.

Suggestions:
MV - Merchant Vessel
SS - StarShip
TV - Trade Vessel
IT - Independant Trader
NM - Non-controlled Merchant

A third digit could be added to better define types.
-L - Liner
-B - Bonded
-C - Colony (Bulk personel)
-G - General (Bulk cargo)
-M - Mixed (Passenger/Cargo)
-T - Tanker
-S - Subsidized
-N - Non-schedualed
-F - Fast
-R - Regulated

Bye for now,
