Translation

I ran a machine translation of rapid-fire plasma canon (for the NSL
Panzergren with the RF plasma SAW) and got:

Sounded very good to me. It had a ring to it.:)

But my german isn't very good, just pretty ok...

Yes, I guess so. Apart from the Panzerfaust, there also is the
'Fliegerfaust' man-portable AA rocket (e.g.Stinger).

It is canon that they are cannons. The Plasma Gun in the back of the SGII book
is Sturmkanone abbreviated SK. So the question is, what sounds best as a term
for a somewhat lighter, more rapid firing version of that weapon? SfSK? Or
ASK?

Literally, 'Faust' means 'Fist', so it's something you use for hitting hard.

AFAIK, the Panzerfaust is the first such composite name.

To my mind Fliegerfaust sounds a bit awkward, but the term was already used in
WWII.

Strictly speaking, German compound words should not be hyphenated. So a German
teacher would insist on 'Schnellfeuerplasmakanone', but most people do it for
clarity.

complex words by concatenation is a little unelegant, it has a certain spartan
charm in that you can see the roots. It also restricts your base vocabulary a
bit which might make the language a tad easier to learn. Still, as someone who
enjoys the sound of
Gaelic, I certainly have to enjoy German - glottal stops and all!

'Kanone' is really an artillery piece and not used for man-portable
weaponry. '-gewehr' (rifle), '-büchse' (musket), '-faust' (as in
Panzerfaust) are alternatives.

20mm or thereabouts. Yet Sci Fi is full of Assault Cannons, Storm Bolters,
Portable Plasma Canons, etc. (I think the distinction for a
canon vs. a gewehr is made because plasma tends to hit pretty hard -
higher impact, more damage). It's kind of taking a bit of liberty with the
term.
