Well, I've almost finished painting my new Sa'vasku fleet which found it's way
to me last weekend (thanks Jon!), and I'm just getting to the bit where I
stick ship names on the bases, and I'm stuck on a couple of big life
shattering questions.
First off, which side of the base do I put the names? Do Sa'vasku fly pointy
bits foreward, or pointy bits aft? Some look better forward, others don't. Is
there an official take on this, or is it just whatever the Sa'vasku feels like
(I'm starting to lean towards the latter)?
The second question is down to names. Has anyone started naming a Sa'vasku
fleet yet? I'm highly tempted to go for
alien-looking squiggles, though this could hamper identification
somewhat (circle-dot-twiddle-deformed-rabbit is firing on
the Victoria Louise).
Alternatively I could nip across to a certain-other-universe,
borrow their universal translator, and stick on some English
translations. For this I'm leaning towards using Culture-style
names (as in Iain M Banks). Things like "Peace is Not An Option" or "Forever
Seeking Solitude".
Anyone got any thoughts on the matter?
> Well, I've almost finished painting my new Sa'vasku fleet which
Verra nice, aren't they? What color did you paint 'em? Mine are
a metallic black. :-)
> First off, which side of the base do I put the names? Do
I think they can go whichever way they damn well feel like, but I *think* the
'official' direction is spikey bits aft.

Names??? Hmmm...hadn't thought of this yet!
> Alternatively I could nip across to a certain-other-universe,
"I Ate Your Honors Student" "What Do You Want?" "Object In Mirror Is Deadlier
than You Think" (written backwards for
the benefit of retreating starships' rear-view mirrors)
"Slice, Dice, and Be Happy" "You Can Run..." "The Shadow Knows..." "In Your
Darkest Hour"
"HELLO!!"
"Shot In The Dark" "Heavy Metal" "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars" "Red Barchetta"
"Breaking The Silence" "First, Last, And Always" "The Terminator" "The
Untouchable"
Well...some thoughts. ;-)

Have you also noticed that the little Sa'Vasku frigate-dudes (I think
they're
frigate-sized - for Sa'Vasku) make quite passable Shadow fighters? :-)

What?! How can you even think about fielding ships without naming them!
Heresy!:)

I do like this one! Right, I'm sold:)

Thankyou!

In MT, the Kra'Vak contact story on p.24 says horns forward. "N'goka's eyes
caught a brief flash of light from the twin horns at the front of the alien
ship..."
But according to the Kra'vak ship design notes on p.27. It was standard
practice to build their ships modularly so they could be configured any way
they or you would want. Though I wouldn't think the rules would allow for
railsguns to be able to fire aft.

D'oh! My mistake. I've been focusing on Kra'Vak minis lately and I must have
gotten my accent marks confused. Forget I said anything since I haven't even
seen the Sa'Vasku minis.

We've got the display Sa'vasku going spines-aft, if it really matters!
> Well, I've almost finished painting my new Sa'vasku fleet which
"Officially", pointy spines aft, but in practice whatever you think looks
best, though I would put some kind of "forward" mark on the base to avoid
arguments with the opposition! {"Your Bl**dy ship's flying backwards!" "No
it's not" etc.]
> The second question is down to names. Has anyone started
Hmmm... well, the Sa'vasku ships are supposed to be alive, and probably
semi-sentient in their own right (the "crew" are themselves
bio-constructs,
probably symbiotic with the ship, so whether the "crew" or ship are actually
in charge is a moot point). So, I guess the name of a ship may
REALLY be its name - if you are translating into english, they could be
Fred or Eric...... (If you are not translating, then maybe it would be
Thhhruppslart**vrtt$fleepboing...)
> whether the "crew" or ship are
Cthulhu, Azathoth, Yog-Sothoth or possibly something *really* scarry
like
Barney!!! =-O

Something I've noticed is that if you glue 2 of the small or medium ones
together, with a spacer in the middle, you get a very passable shadow vessel.
A little bending might be required but looks quite good.

Gee, a ship named after me ;) Semi-sentient and all....... ;)

Yeah, thats what me signature looks like;)

Musical notes (only if you can whistle) Squiggles ("The spaceship formerly
known as light cruiser") Vorlon quotes from back episodes of B5? Go, out, get
very drunk, then try and give a name to what your tongue feels like the next
day. "Big blob", "Little blob"..
Actually, there's a Terry Pratchett quote about goats that seems to apply.

Doesn't sound that impressive, though :/

That's why the Culture sprung to mind - Culture Ships are
controlled by a Mind, and are considered to be sentient beings in their own
right (just several million times more knowledgeable, intelligent and crafty
than humans). The name of the Culture ship is the name of its Mind. (the crew
are realy just along for the ride, and rarely serve any useful function).

The best frame of mind to be in, I always thought:)

Or the old joke of: "Three of your ships have the same name, there's the
Hastur, Hastur and the Hastur... oh bugger"
