Well, it seems as though everyone can see £ as the pound sign except for one
person on a VAX system. It all seems incredibly clear now! "=A3" is caused by
nothing more than an older OS not knowing what to do with the international
characters.
The reason that I tried this is because I remembered Jon's original post
having the symbol correct, then in the reply it was messed up. So Jon, most of
see the "£" properly.
Thanks to all who answered. TTYL

Well, if '=A3' translates into a pound sign (#), what does '=3D' translate
into?

On this Telnet Window to a Sun, that is "equals A 3", and In Netscape with the
default AUTO Japanese font, it isn't a pound sign
either. To me '\' is the YEN mark, a big Y with 2 small strokes through
it, but I bet you all just see it as a backslash!

An equals sign! That is very wierd! Replacing an equals with a '=3D'! I'll
change my.sig. That must be very annoying!
