LOL-DON, ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE IMMORTALS AT FORT MYERS, VA? I was in the 2nd US Infantry, a fighting battalion among fighting battalions, and we (and others) referred to the 3rd as "The Immortals" because the regiment had not seen combat since around the turn of the last century... they were also known as the Military Kubuki Club, because all the unit did was military kubuki (ceremonials). the black Ranger beret. as i recall from being on the scene wy back when, the black beret was given to LRRPS in the RVN, and the LRRPS were all Ranger and Airborne qualified troops. the reason SOOOOOOOOOOO many US Generals run around with airborne bades is because way back when, if you were an officer and if you planned on getting promoted you went to both Airborne and Ranger Schools. ditto for career NCOs with infantry MOS and no lip lock on some officer. promotion requirements. remember Rangers became re-activated as Airborne Rangers during the Korean War, and then de-activated afterwards except for the Ranger School. DAWGIE, who wore an effen boonie hat in all of his non steel pot travels into the green...
