The inspiration for the OU ships comes from the 'Fifth Element' movie, in that
film the Earth ships were flattened cylinders with conning tower and a array
of antennae protruding from the front. So it's probably safe to say
that the 'prongs' on the OU ships are indeed sensor/communications
antennae.
