Subject: The can of worms (Measuring)

All,

It seems that in writing that portion of the tournament rules for Gencon UK
2000 concerning measurment has open a whole can of worms.

It comes down to: Allow pre-measure, or don't allow premeasure.

I've come up with this rule as a replacement for the current one regarding
measuring:

"Pre-measuring of any and all distances will be allowed. Judges reserve
the right to intercede at any table where they believe that unnessecary time
wasting is going on through measuring. Interceding will range from a verbal
warning to the banning of pre-measurment by the offending player in the
most extreme cases."

Good idea? Bad? Comments?

Its true that there are those who look to the competitive part of the
tournament and forget about fun, playing the game, and being involved. Its the
first tournament i've tried to organise and as always the GZG List is
inspirational! There are bound to be a few teething problems.

Cheers,

In my opinion, tournaments should not allow pre-measurement (there's
already enough pressure on the rules lawyers to win), where I think that it's
OK for other events.

Sounds good by me, however temper this with the fact that I'm not going to be
attending in person. Although if they get the same guest I had a chance
to say hi to there in '98 I might fly the UK to attend. ;-)

At GenCon in Milwaukee we don't allow pre-measuring. Personally, I'd
allow it, but I'm not a fanatic about it. However, we do allow referees to be
called in for controversial measuring. This is usually in the case of someone
doing questionable moves, and such. So, with that in mind, you don't need to
ban
someone, just let a referee do all the pre-measuring if he thinks
someone is abusing the system.

It's rarely worth anyone's while to abuse pre-measuring by taking more
time. If you're in the lead, you can try to hold out before the time limit is
up, I suppose. But I find the game changes so quickly that anyone trying to
slow the game deliberately might end up losing in the end.
