Subject: The burgeoning Full Thrust "scene" in Grand Rapids, MI

I've started trying to stir up interest in Full Thrust in my neck of the woods
and had a real good time of it. EVERYONE who has tried the rules is
enthusiastic in their enjoyment of it.

The first time I played a game with a friend at my house kinda got me started
at the whole "promoting/recruiting" thing for FT. Since that day on the
22nd of August my list of actively involved FT player had grown to include 8
people with more people expressing interest in playing every time I run a
game.

I've put together a "log" of sorts with all of the postings to our local

gaming group's message board so that I could share them with the group.

I also put them on a site so that those not interested wouldn't have to wade
through the long email that would have resulted from my sending the
"log"
straight to the list.

The bandwidth cap on that free site is kinda low, so hopefully you guys won't
"slashdot" it too bad... *grin*

We've taken it really slow, introducing new aspect of the game like fighters
and SMLs, each game. We've also restricted players to using only human ships
(FB1, basically). The interest at the gaming store in the SV is high enough
that I think we're going to have at least two players jump in once we decide
to include them.

Enjoy!

Now I wonder if Mr.Tuffley would like to sponsor an event with some GZG swag
for the participants (hint-hint).

That's very cool.

GZG-East Coast Convention. February 27-29, 2004. Be there. Sir Jon will
be
in attendance. :-)

Big thanks, Tim!

Did you come up with any ideas or observations in the teaching process?
Obviously, don't snow folks with too many details or add-ons is a given,
and one you perfectly took to heart.

I know that finally demo-ing to my girlfriend while she was a captive
audience in a hospital bed brought a few things to mind. One, diagrams or
templates as examples of possible moves with various initial speeds and
thrusts might help to visualize what are the possible moves of an opponent,
and how to plot your own. I think I suggested earlier, when playing
one-on-one with a newbie, that you plot your own move, then let them
measure their own potential moves before making the move, and introduce
written plots as they gain confidence.

Please do add any idea, or shoot mine down if you must, that you can!
;->=

Oh, yeah, Derek and Beth probably have lots of good ideas of 'bringing along'
youngun's.

It's the best way to learn any game, and that's what I was doing. I learned

While they played, I read to make sure we were doing that part of the rules

Oh, BTW, we're playing Vector, naturally.

Sheesh! My wife wouldn't even entertain gaming if she was laid up. You're a
conniving man... but I mean that in a nice way.

I'd done away with written orders for my son (5 at the time) when he and I
played a while ago. I still wrote my orders. It worked out just fine.

Where is that again? It's unlikely I'll be able to attend any
out-of-state
events. With a non-gamer wife and three sons it's hard to go to the big

cons.

A URL would be fine...

Can't take TOO much credit; she'd gone in for a relatively simple procedure,
and had suffered a small complication that extended her stay. She kept saying
how it didn't compare to my stay last December, but I could see the 'what
next' made it really hard on her.

Suffering boxed-in fever, she'd ASKED me for any games I might want to
share, and we did the FTII explanation, a quick Lost Worlds book battle, and a
LONG Trivial Pursuit game that made obvious just how ossified my grey matter
has become.

Haven't been able to get her to play since, though. ;->=

G'day,

> Oh, yeah, Derek and Beth probably have lots of good ideas of 'bringing

- Don't start with too many ships and at first give adults weaker ships
than the kids (not by much, but just give the kids a little edge)
- Start with direct fire weapons only (beams for a few games, then torps
etc), but you can build up to placed marker stuff and fighters
- Let them go first (if they're teamed up with an adult they'll accept
initiative rolls, but if by themselves they usually gripe before 6)
- Before 5-6 just let them say where they want to go (write your own
then get them to say where they want to go, writing there's down is good as it
gives them the clue that that's what you're supposed to do). Once they can
write for themselves and can distinguish left from right then writing orders
is the done thing for them too
- Sound effects are a must... they should always be, but with children
they take the edge of the hurt of a loss (especially if you play up your own
dying sounds) and can be excused with justification when people look at you
strangely;)

After a few games you'll know you'll have succeeded when they whop your butt
when you were trying to beat them fair and square! Worked for us at least,
Lachy runs his DOR ("Destroyer of Races" which are SV miniatures
with SSDS = a mish-mash of alien tech), Janneke has taken over "her
Japanese" (i.e Stablazers as opposed to Derek's GZG Japs) and Mei (now nearly
2) is an ace die roller (who yet again has taken after her Dad in the "rolling
what Daddy needs for her to blast Mummy" stakes).

With a family of 5 you could hold your own FT convention;)

Cheers

If you're planning to introduce Sa'Vasku, I've included the official errata at
the bottom of the post (if you haven't seen it elsewhere).

Don't you guys always play with sound effects? I've been gaming with sound
effects since day one and the youngest in our group today is 15 with most of
us in or near our 40's!!!

It helps when the rules require it (see Fantasy Flight's MagBlast).

One of my friends has this habit of saying "BANG!" when he rolls the dice for
whichever is the biggest gun/model in his force.

While we were playing FT he did that then muttered something about it being
deep space and for the rest of the game when he rolled dice for his big ship
he just mouthed the word "BANG!" each time he rolled.

Depends who's playing not all the players here are grown up enough to
appreciate sound effects, some are still going through that awkward
respectable stage that comes between the various childhoods in ones life
;)
