The Japanese DD is definitely derived from Gundam, specifically the
Zeon Musai-class light cruiser. This site has a nice page on the
class:
http://mechadomain.gundam.com/gundam/msgundam/musai.htm
Gundam has a lot of nice spaceship designs - I'd very much like to
see a not-White Base model.

If you're up to a little adventuring, go to
http://www.bandai.co.jp/products/products1.html
The page is in Japanese, so expect gibberish unless you have fonts installed.
In the upper right are two pull-down menubars. On the lower bar, select
the second line (the first line is the default line). Click the small button
to the right of that bar.
All Bandai model kits in production will be displayed with onscreen JPEGS.
They
still have a large line of $5 Yamato models, generally about 3-4 inches
long and many of them are quite nice, given that they're plastic.
Also,
The "official" yamato site is at http://yamato.channel.or.jp/
The "official" gundam page is http://www.gundam.channel.or.jp/
Good luck! (Might be easier if you had japanese fonts and could read them, but
you should be able to find something interesting anyway).

I'll revise that eventually.

Leadership is highly variable--you get 1s in militia
units (frequently former active duty troops, but occasionally raw talent) and
3s in elite units (academy grads who believe their own propaganda).

I'd say elites. They have a real tendency not to
surrender--and the modern Varangians are not simply
troublemakers and fortuneseekers shipped off because the Prince of Kiev didn't
want them anymore. The
selection/indoctrination course is patterned after
Ranger school. Furthermore, Varangians stay in the regiment for their entire
service, frequently for the entire 20 years needed for pension (or 30 needed
for citizenship). This creates a more cohesive bond than regular units.

Varangians don't take orders from Greeks well. On the other hand, almost
anyone takes orders from
power-armored behemoths with Danish war axes.

Sorry for the intruption, but...
It appears my web host went under. 8^(
Does anyone know of a free web host that supports Access Databases and Active
Server Pages?
I was downsized two days after closing on my house, so money is somewhat tight
at the moment.
Anyone who knows of such a provider, please contact me off-list.
Thanks,
