I figure that the average gaming table is 4' by 6', and as much as we'd all
like to have more space for our glorious hobby, it generally doesn't happen.
Thus, if you're going to do a system scale tabletop game, it needs to
generally fit in that area. Since systems are generally circular shaped
things, let figure our limits are 72" by 72" (fudging a bit, I know).
Now let's take a look at the solar system. In ours, these are the orbital
radii: Mercury 58x10^6 km Venus 108x10^6 km Earth 150x10^6 km Mars 228x10^6 km
Jupiter 778x10^6 km I could go on, but I think that this should about cover
us.
Scale. To include Mars, and out to about 360x10^6 km, then a scale of 1" =
5x10^6 km = 1 MU works nice. To keep things simple, 1" = 10x10^6 km = 1 MU
might work better. This would be 10^4 larger than FT's assumed scale of
approximately 1x10^3 KM = 1 MU. This doesn't quite get us out to Jupiter
orbit, but I think I can live with that. If necessary, you could always
"slide" your map over to include any necessary point in space.
At that assumed scale, the orbital radii would be: Mercury 5.8" Venus 10.8"
Earth 15" Mars 22.8" Jupiter 77.8" (which would be off our map)
Time scale. This is where things get tricky. To keep movement, etc. in the
same units we'd have to up the time scale by 10^4 as well. Using the assumed
FT turn of 15 min. (900 sec. rounded up to 1000 just to make things easier)
would give a turn length of 10^7 sec., or approximately 100 days per turn.
BORING.
If we assume that ships can use micro-jumps within the inner system,
we could figure that ships could cut this by a factor of 100. 1 day per turn;
much better. Further assuming that this is in some way related to a ships Main
Drive rating lets us keep a movement system related to that figure (rather
than equal for all ships, which is what we'd get if we based it on the vanilla
FTL drive).
Because the micro-jumps do not depend on acceleration or any
maintained velocity, we can further say that a ship can move as many MU as its
MD rating. Thus a Thrust 6 ship moves 6" = 6 MU per turn.
From here, we can just say that ships within 1 MU may engage in FT style
combat, and PRESTO, we have the basis for a system scale!
