I agree completely. I enjoyed the book, but I don't think a theatrical version
would be anything spectacular. Try "Full Metal Jacket" for something
closer to "ST": that seems to weigh in more on the inner-workings of
the
boot camp mind. As for Heinlein's half-baked philosophy, that is
powerful enough to hold a good movie together. As Sony reps said after a
preview of it several months ago: add more bugs!

Somehow I missed the original post... <snip>
> I think you need to take Hollywood with a grain of salt. Take it as

I saw the preview... its "Space: Above & Beyond" right down to flack
jackets, machine guns/rifles; boxy insertion craft ...

No powered armor [unless this is going to be a "secret weapon" Johnny joins
that ultimately wins us the war].

Having been a long-time fan of StT I was "dreading" what was
going to
happen to it. When I saw the preview I was pretty ticked-off. However,
after reading this discussion I think the best way to look at this is that
this is a
movie-length episode of "Space: Above and Beyond", just as there are
theatrical Star Trek episodes, and the title they chose for the movie is just
like "Lost World" was chosen for Jurassic Park: Part 2 even though there is a
classic written work already by that title.

Just a bit of re-programming, dissociation, and fatalism [heavy
sigh] and Praise the Lord that they will spend so much time on this as an
action
film that they will leave the wonderful socio-political aspects of the
book alone!

Thanks for the soapbox

I saw a trailer for it when I went to see MIB and there is definitely some
time spent in boot camp. The problem apparently was that CGI was too expensive
to do for power armour, it was too hot to put the actors in uncooled power
armour costumes, and it was too expensive to create cooled power armour
costumes.

Personally, I never cared much for the original book. Mind you, I read it
after _The Forever War_ when I was 16. There weren't enough battle
sequences
in ST for me. I'd love to see them do _The Forever War_ as a film,
though...

This is a great book and for anyone who hasn't read, you should.

This would also be a good story to re-inact in dirt side II.

Forever War... (Yawn). I'll take Armor, please. Forget all those high morals,
forget even the "big picture". Who needs it? Let's all
just face it - what we really want is guys in armored suits killing
bugs. And bugs killing guys in armored suits. Armor's got all that
plus nuclear-powered suicide so what more could you ask for?

Armor has a bit more going for it that just bugs/suits killing

It's been a long time since last time i read the forever war but if i'm not
mistaken there was ARMOR.. when they landed... they used powered suits..

I could be wrong.. but i think they did.

PS.. I know a lot of people on the list don't like GW.. (mainly due to
prices and some stupid moves they make). BUT they have been waiting
for someone to look into doing a movie or something.. a group of people
(students did a demo type thing for a project in school (college) and it
looked great. had all the bugs.. (tyranids) and armor (spacewolf terminators)
you could want.. if you know any one who works in or with GW staff.. ask about
it.. see ifyou can;t get a peek.

Not hardly....

<grin> Yeah. Pretty interesting story, too, and it does have some commentary
in it if you want to pay attention to it. But I tend to just pull out the book
on occation and read all the bits with Felix in
'em....

Ahh, Armor, yes, a great book. I just wish Steakley wrote another one...

A plot and characterization would be nice. :-)

He has. He's written at least one other one. The book I'm thinking of is
_Vampire$_ (yes, the dollar sign is deliberate). It's about a vampire
hunting group who hunt for profit. The opening chapter has them spear a
vampire with a specialized crossbow bolt. The bolt head cleared the back of
the vampire and opened up like a small grapple. The other end of the bolt was
attached to a rope, which was in turn attached to a winch on a jeep (or was it
Range Rover?). They cranked the winch and hauled the vampire out into the
sunlight...

I haven't read it but my wife has read it a couple of times and highly
recommends it. Rumour has it that it is being made into a movie, starring
James Woods.
