Subject: Starship sizes

Hi all,
   Finally getting back into the groove of doing some kit-bash
design starships and with all the fuss of scale I wanted to see if what I plan
is acceptable size wise.
SDN = 5-6 inch
CV    = 5-6 inch
DN   = 4.5-5 inch
BC = 4.5-5 inch, thinner than DN
CA   = 3.5 inch
CVE = 3.5 inch
CL    = 2.5 inch
DD   = 1.5 inch

Are these to far out of scale? Considering I plan to cast my own stuff I dont
want these to weigh a ton but I want them comparable to existing scales.

Also, is there a FT editor out there that takes into account the Fleet books
for the Mac?

Thanx,
   Kirk

All the above are probably a bit big, assuming that you're going for an
'average' bulk (ie not very long and skinny). Just off the top of my head,
I've made both BB and BC at 65mm long (but with differing bulks), DN and SDN
between 80 and 100mm, fleet CV 100mm long, CVE 60mm, CVL 70mm.

Still slightly too long, this is more like CE - CA length.

> DD = 1.5 inch

Agreed here - mine are around 40mm long.

For the larger ships especially, think carefully about making them in kit form
so that they can be hollow.

First rule, of course, is what looks good to you.

That said, I'd have to say these seem a bit on the long side; would help if
you have an idea to share whether these are long and thin, squat, or what.

Also, a jump of an inch for each class 'group' may be a bit much; the DD
ends up being closer. You might try about 2/3 to 3/4 as long on the
entire list.

My Texaco (TFNS) super-carriers, yet to be assembled, are a little over
four inches, and in three equal, large pods. However, my fluff is that they
are converted merchant hulls tied together, light and fragile and BIG.

For those interested, here are the generic patterns that I am going to use for
my scratchbuilds.

G'day Kirk,

Nice and they look about the right size to me. What kind of depth detail

are you going to give them?

Cheers

I have been collecting various bits and pieces from model kits, dome style
beads, and just alot of cool odds & ends. I am going to try and make the

majority of the ship modular. Plan on using a 2-part RTV for the mold.

Hmmm. Hard to tell on a monitor (size of monitor and resolution can greatly
change an image size on the screen).

I printed out your outlines (nice by the way).

If they are flat (3mm thick or less): SDN Close to the size of a Komorov, so
is about right.
DN May be a little large (no DNs in official minis, SDN and BDN).
CVE Close to size of inflexible (without deck).
CV If CVH or CVA, it is about the correct size.
CA If Hvy Cruiser, this is a little heavy.
CL About right. May be a little heavy.
DD About right. May be a little light.

If they are more than 3mm thick, they are all too heavy.

Again, this is IMHO.

Are the splits forward (like Renegade Legion Tanks) or aft (like the Protector
in Galaxy Quest)?

Main hull thickness will be in the 2-4 mm range. The module sections
that runs down the centerline of the ship are 13mm wide and depending on the
class are 25mm to 50mm high not counting detailing pieces. I had planned on
all vessels to carry to carry at least 1 group of fighters so they would be
larger than you standard vessels of their class size. The more I get into this
project the more I am going to try and make the larger classes as modular as
possible.
