Hello All!
Has anyone seen or had any dealings with Reviresco Products / John
McEwan. He produces a bunch of miniatures for his Starguard! game. Does
anyone use 'em or have some, what's the quality like ? They're 1/72 so
they'd be suitable for DII, and true 25mm scale. But the webpage for
Reviresco ( http://www.halcyon.com/shamrock/ ) doesn't really have any
pics of 'em. They DO have a killer field mounted gauss gun and some
snazzy Tanks/APC. Also has anyone played Starguard ?. I'm also looking
for Ral Partha Ogre secondary batteries too, if the structural integrity of my
secondaries is any indication, they should be harder to find than the Ogres
themselves.
Thanks,
Gene

I have to be honest, though; the quality has not impressed me at all. Very
skinny figures, crude detail, awkward poses. But the prices are nice, I'll
give 'em that much. On the other hand, some of the figures ARE pretty nice.
I'm working on some of his "Nautaloid" figures right now. Basically, big
cephelapods with snail shells on their backs and big weapons. See, I
remembered that real octopi and the like can change their skin color to
camoflage themselves, and that inspired me to work on them, so...but I
digress. Honestly, the Nautaloids, along with some little wheeled robots that
look like mechanical piranhas, are the only Starguard figures that I have
really been impressed by. That's just my opinion, though, so take it for
whatever it's worth....

Don't know about the Starguard stuff, but I thought the OGRE folks on the list
might be interested in this post I received from John McEwan. The link I
mention starting from is TANK 101: Taking a Look at Janus.

They're a little smaller than the DSII line. Dunno what size
they _really_ are.

Neither, unfortunately, does their "fully illustrated" catalog.

Yeah, 25mm is like 1/69 or so... but their 'page ad touts 'em as
close to 25mm.
> I have to be honest, though; the quality has not impressed me at
I was afraid of that, too bad. A buck or so a fig IS pretty good. The
pics of the 1/300 scale tank on the miniatures page (
http://www.eden.com/~tmp/ ) looks pretty hip, as do the 1/72 tanks from
Reviresco's page ( http://www.halcyon.com/shamrock/ ). I'm really
enamored of the gauss artillery piece ( I have some metal magic Cybertech
gunners with Arty shells in their hands that simply must be equipped with
these beauties).

That reminds me of the old Heritage(?!?) Octopoids From Galacta
25....

Well, maybe if I can get a grab-bag of stuff or buy a few
singles. Has
anyone seen/played the rules. A well considered opinion is worth a
lot.....

Well, I've found rebasing some of the smaller figs like the "Denizen" line
from Stone Mountain or 'Partha's 25mm Battletech minis makes 'em look a little
bigger at least.

Ack, worse and worse. Has anyone seen their tanks or spaceship lines up close?
Also, are they exclusively mail order? I don't remember ever seeing any of the
minis in stores.

I think you must mean the SGII line.
> Well, I've found rebasing some of the smaller figs like the "Denizen"
This has worked for me. Heavy flocking can really "boost-up" a
23mm figure like those of Starguard.
> > >Neither, unfortunately, does their "fully illustrated" catalog.
John McKewan does a lot with a little, I think. The whole 50's
feel of the Starguard line gives me the warm fuzzies ;-)
> Ack, worse and worse. Has anyone seen their tanks or spaceship
Exclusively mail order I believe, and incredibly fast and
efficient mail order at that! I'm expecting a big order of 1/300 Blower
Cars any day now. I'll let you folks know what I think. So far I've gotten
a set of Starguard Power armor troopers and a a set of Dreenoi "bugs"--I
am happy with both sets, but I will state that they are not 25mm, but more
like 22-23mm. Their simple lines lend them some elegance, though a more
discriminating miniatures fan than myself might call them crude.

I think 1/72 is 25mm; 1/87 is 20mm, from my experience.

Like I said in earlier reply, I put Starguard minis at around
22-23mm, or roughly comparable to Stargrunt.
> >>I have to be honest, though; the quality has not impressed me at
I didn't find them crude, but I guess by today's lofty standards, they do lack
something in the way of detail, but they make up for that in characater and
affordability.
> I was afraid of that, too bad. A buck or so a fig IS pretty
I'll let folks know about the quality of the 1/300 Blower Cars
(read:GEVs) I get from reviresco (hopefully today or tomorrow). I like that
Gauss piece as well.
> > > On the other hand, some of the figures ARE
I love the Dreenoi "bugs" I got in my first order.
> Well, maybe if I can get a grab-bag of stuff or buy a few
I'm also expecting a pair of 25mm (i.e., 22-23mm) APCS with my
order of 1/300 stuff. I'll also report on thesewhen they arrive. As for
the rules.... I'm afraid I can't give them the ringing endorsement I have
given the figures. They are at best disjointed, and at worst, possibly
unplayable in their current format. I think the nucleus of a good system is
there, but John desperately needs an editor and some more playtesting.
If you like the figures (as I very much do), play them with SGII stuff (as I
do), or with whatever rules you're fond of.
> Thanks.
GW Space Marines look about a foot and a half taller than a SGII
trooper and more than twice as wide. that GW/Warzone scale (30mm or
so and bigger every year) is really too large to look right against 25mm figs.
On the other hand the GW WH40K plastic vehicle kits are
almost right for 25mm.(At least the RHONO APC+ variants is) However a
source of OK cheap figs is the ALIENS Colonial marine boxed set. Most stores
are liquidating them if they have any. I bought 3 boxes for $4.00 US each.
They look pretty good with my SGII FSE Minis. I use the group as mercenaries
to explain the figure equipment variations.
> ----------
I just found a bunch of 22mm-23mm Denizen K'hiff "Space Coyotes"
for dirt cheap so I'm not particulary too worried about scale 'specially with
Alien races. Unfortunately, my old Traveller 2300 figs are just way dang small
(true 20mm).
> I didn't find them crude, but I guess by today's lofty
I'd love to hear about 'em.
> > > > On the other hand, some of the figures ARE
Well, it sounds like I'll bite for the rules (worst comes to worst, it'll be
good for reading material) and some of the Alien races, at
least it'll support small press gaming, so what-the-hey. I suppose with
all the kitbashing I do the worst that can happen is vehicle and gun parts end
up in the bits box. I don't mind less 'baroque' more austere
(read normal-looking) miniatures, I'm definately a Ral Partha /
Grenadier miniatures guy, not a Games Workshop guy, but you have to draw the
line on really poor, tiny miniatures, but from what I've heard I'll try 'em,
well, at least a few.
Thanks

Preach it, brother! I too, am a Ral Partha man--that's why I
like the Stargrunt mins so much; they are straight 25mm minis that have that
hard SF feel to them. Starguard aliens might be the best bet for someone who
isn't into the smaller space marines, but wants a nice assortment of aliens to
throw at his Stargrunt or RP minis. I highly recommend the
Dreenoi starter set--you get 10 "bugs" for 10 bucks. Not bad.
Your point about supporting the small-timer is a good one as
well. Folks like John McKewan (and tha people at GZG for that matter) are
doing nice work, while holding the line with reasonable prices. They should be
rewarded with our patronage.

Okay, semi-ignorant question from moi: what scale is the GW (non-Epic)
stuff at? (okay, what scale is their Epic stuff at, then, too?). I haven't
seen any Stargrunt figures here (even went looking at the local Big Supplier
yesterday after work; no Stargrunt, but finally plenty of FT ships:). I
happen to own 10 Space Marines (courtesy of my brother one x-mas, who is
big into GW), and want to know: are they going to be too big for Stargrunt
figs? I've been trying to follow this thread (among others:) to devine this
knowledge, and either it slipped past me, or no one mentioned it 'cause y'all
know what you're discussing and I don't (yet).

GW minatures are slightly larger than stargrunt minature. 30mm? GW just tend
to exagerate their minature (very buffed musle even bigger then Arnold).

The generally accepted scale for GW (40k) minis is 28mm-30mm
which
comes out to between 1/61st scale to about 1/58th scale in modeling
terms.

All the stores around here don't seem to want to drop their prices on Leading
Edge's figs, they ain't worth full price, even with the case and
all.....

Who knows? Officially 28mm, it just grows bigger and bigger. 32mm? 34mm? I
lost track some time ago. Big. Bigger figures are easier to model. All scales
are growing. People call 1:72 20mm... do the maths, you find its 25mm (inch *
72 = 6 foot). 15mm's too are growing. GW
doesn't care if old figures are out-of-scale with the new, and many
manufacturers copy their scale.
> I
Space Wombles are pretty big, but you can justify the height with PSB. Being
covered in armour could be said to boost their height, as could genetic
modification etc.

Far as I and others can tell by eyeballing them, I mark GW "25mm"
figs at anywhere between 28mm-30mm! Unreal proportions and
over-accessorization (not necessarily bad things if you're into that,
but not for me) make those Space Marines, et al, literally larger than life.
GW tank kits (the more normal looking ones!), OTOH, might work well as
Super-heavy tanks for SGII.
For a long while, I thought that I was in the minority because I liked 25mm
figures that actually were close to 25mm and I liked my SciFi figures to be
more realistic rather than Conan the Barbarian in Space. But with the recent
postings about the Starguard and Ral Partha figures, I feel much less alone. I
have played Starguard and do have a number of their figures and I like they
way the look. They give me more of the feel of futuristic soldiers as
portrayed in a lot of the SciFi literature. The GW style of figures reminds me
of a steroid factory gone wild (or overdone genetic engineering). So count me
as one of their fans.
Where can I get some colonial marines?
Well, for better or for worse, my order to Reviresco is in the mail as of
yesterday. I ordered the rules sets, and a set of the Dreenoi 'Bugs',
a set of the Nekton 'Frogs', a set of the Nautaloid 'Snail-Octopi', as
well as a battery of 4 gauss rifles on field carriages. I figure I'll shy away
from the more humanoid races for now. After all, who's to say that a Dreenoi
isn't 1.1m tall in 25mm scale and weighs 30kg?
You may rest assured that I will give a review of the minis as soon as they
show up (soon, I hope.....). Now if they're good, the next task is getting
some of the spaceships.....

These figures are from Leading Edge Games. They also produced true 25mm
figures for their Living Steel game. I bought a whole bunch of these for use
with SG2, but I am now planning to use 15mm figures. I also have a whole bunch

completely.
The friend of the owner of LEG is getting rid of these figures at major cons.
He usually sells them for about US$7. This include 8 figures, and a plastic
case (with foam) for storage. They are a nice set of miniatures. I've seen a
couple of places sell them at GenCon for $5 a box (one guy was flogging the
box as a cheap storage case, totally ignoring the miniatures) but their
assortment was limited. Along with the Aliens stuff, there are also Terminator
models by the same company.
The Starguild and Seven Sword power armour sets can be used almost universally
(the Starguild would make good MI if you want to try Starship Troopers). The
Neemis Enterprise boxed set would supply one five person squad (one of the
figs is female) and three power armoured support troops. Another set (can't
remember the name) consist of "humanoid hamsters" in combat suits (lighter
than power armour) if you want a set of enemies. The Larden (unarmoured lizard
guys) and Dragoncrests (power armoured lizard guys; no relation to Larden)
make another nice alien force. The Visser set is good for armed civilians.
They are an excellent buy, but I think the figures might be getting scarce.
