We haven't done a WWII conversion as such but we have played some WWII games
at my club (Maidstone, Kent).
The conversion is fairly simple - no armour, all troops have similar
weapons (bolt action rifles or SMGs). We gave belt-fed SAWs (German
MG34) a better die type than box-fed ones (Bren) - d10 against d8
IIRC. We gave them a further die type increase (to d12) if they had a
second crew member feeding the ammo - which then became the weapon
type for an HMG.
For our first games we just picked command and quality markers at random from
the pot. This meant that my BEF infantry platoon was
lucky enough to have two red squads :-) with class-2 and class-3
officers :-(. The German SS recce squad was given their only red
marker which, since they were quite a large squad, made them very powerful. in
future on we'll select the chits a bit better (ie we'll give the French most
of the green and yellow ones).
The main game saw the Germans heavily repulsed by the BEF defenders. The SS
squad got isolated in the middle of a road, no cover and stuck
in a crossfire. They'd tried to close-assault a BEF squad but failed
their rolls (they were a red-2 squad, imagine how badly my opponent
threw to create this unfortunate situation). This moment turned the battle
once they'd been cut to pieces by an inspired set of BEF die rolls.
Lots of fun - we'll probably do it again some time as an alternative
to our usual tank-heavy WWII blasts. Didn't use any vehicles,
although I'm sure we will. The only downside we found was that the pace of the
game was much slower. With six players but only one squad
active at a time it meant a lot of waiting around - unavoidable
because of the SG2 activation mechanism.
Has anyone done something like this? The reason I ask is that I have at elast
one company fo German and British Paras, and though I love skirmish level,
controlling THAT many guys would take for ever, unless we go the Stargrunt
route. I thought I remembered seeingthat someone had done a WW2 conversion.

Does everyone else pull chits at random from the entire collection provided? I
don't throw yellow ones into the mix unless it's a
non-military force on the board--I figure street cops _might_ be so
inexperienced in firefights as to pull those. Or not, if from Beirut, or
Belfast.:) Mobs certaintly would count as this, as would Iranian or Iraqi
militia. Red chits don't show up unless we're dealing with
elements of a truly elite force--Rangers, 307th Engineers, SAS, Foreign
Legion Paras, Green Beanies, etc. And I weight the chits for other forces. For
example, militia batallions not only have crappy equipment, they pick from
green and regular chits only. Regulars from
good quality formations with combat experience and/or superb training
(i.e., my Tagmatic troops, Waffen-SS, 3rd Army in WWII, US/UK troops in
Desert Storm) pick from only regular and veteran chits, etc.
OK Los, here is the post of Michael Blair's dealing with WWII. From memory it
generated a bit of discussion, but that's what the list is for.
Enjoy,
Owen G Rather than buying a WWW II ruleset I thought why not use Stargrunt,
the
first fruits of this idea lie below. I am not sure how well the command &
control system fits but I guess quite well, even if I have to make everything
worse (yes, even the SS!).
STARGRUNT II WW II WEAPONS Weapon Range Firepower Impact Example Pistol Close
1 D4 <= 9 mm P Heavy Pistol Close 1 D6.45,.455
Shotgun Close 1 D10 12-Bore Pump
SMG Close 3 D8 MP-40, Thompson, Sten...
Carbine 1 D6 M1 Carbine Machine Carbine 2 D6 M2 Carbine Assault Rifle 2 D8 StG

Bolt-Action Rifle 1 D10 Kar 98k, SMLE...
Automatic Rifle 2 D10 FG 42, BAR SAW D6 D10 Bren LMG D8 D10 MG34, MG42 MMG D10

These are just a few quick ideas, untested and untried. I think there are
maybe too many of them but better too many than too few. I am not very happy
with SMGs.

Hell, no. I'm 229th EN BN. The 307th EN (ABN) BN is the divisional engineer
batallion from the 82nd Airborne. Historically has had both a higher
percentage of casualties and of decorations than any of the infantry
batallions. I've had the pleasure of working with several
former members of that unit--including my current platoon leader who
was a sergeant in the 307th.

I take your LT is an OCS type then.
In my years in the US Army it seemed that the OCS officers made the best
Platoon leaders, so-so battery commanders and crappy battalion
commanders.
Could be the officers in question also, as my OCS LTC "data sample" was only
one. He could have been an ass as 2LT as well.

Not exactally. He's a "Go to VMI for two years, run out of money, go to
Regular Army for four years, go back to VMI and get an ROTC comission in the
National Guard 'coz he's sick of the Real Army" type.

A few people have put DSII WWII stuff on their websites, and you can easily
convert that over to SGII.
We ran a 20mm WWII game a while ago with German Gebirgsjaegers versus
Russians;
No armour, 1D8 move Rifles FP1, 1D10 damage SMGs FP2, 1D6 damage, CLOSE only
SAWs 1D8 support, 1D10 damage (a bren or BAR would be 1D6 support) Panzerfaust
1D10 support, 1D12 (Heavy 1D12x2) Panzershreck 1d10 damage (Heavy D10x2)
Most tanks (Pz IV, T34) would have level 2-3 armour
With the generics weapon list in the SGII rules, you can pretty much
guesstimate any conflict from the Boer War on up. We've done Vietnam in 20mm
using SGII, but I would *love* to try some Desert Storm in 20mm.
Platoon 20 out of England/Ireland does a pretty extensive line of modern
(20th century) figs. Some of the WWII and Vietnam figs are *crap*, but they
have a wide selection.
What figs do you use for your WWII games?

Same thing here!
For most of our games we stick to vets, regs, and greens. I have
used yellow a few times only when playing untrained/poorly trained
insurgents, although I am looking forward to a game of Korean Student
Demonstrators Versus ROC Marines...:)
If it is a 4 squad platoon, then we may have 6-8 blue chits
(rated
1-3), 1-3 vet chits (rated 1-3), and 1-2 green chits (1-3). The green
would simulate guys just out of Boot with no combat experience. This is
for 'pick-up' or general games. If the scenario has specific
paramertes, then we choose from weighted chit pools (a 'spec foreces' mission
would
choose from elite/vet pools, etc.)
Quality is important (duh!), but I have been discovering, in my albeit slow
fashion, that leadership is REALLY important, especially in the realm of arty
and rallying. Anyone else with similar experiences? I have gotten away with
having platoon or company commands with being green
(90-day wonder Liuetenants, anyone?), but that '3' is a *killer*...

My favourites are the Figures, Armour, Artillery (FAA) models, again
from here in the UK. They do a great range of early war ('39-'40)
Germans, BEF and French including heavy weapons, command staff, gun crews,
even MPs. I've also got some Dixons Poles which at the time I bought them were
the only Polish figures I could find. SHQ figures are also extremely good and
IIRC they do German, Polish and Russian Cavalry.

I am in *love* with SHQ; everything that I have seen from them I like.
Britannia is adequate, although I think that their gebirgsjaegers are great.
I have a ton of FAA and Drew's Militia. They are keen too, although one fo
them (Drew's) are MUCH TOO CLOSE to scale, i.e. the weapon barrels are thin as
a hair, their arms fragile, etc.
SHQ just started their German cavalry not too long ago. I have never seen any
Russian cav (though VERY interested). Britannia does some neat SS 'Florian
Geyer' cav figs.
