I'd like to try a sci-fi skirmish game. I've got a bunch of board
games with figures (Space Hulk, Legions of Steel, Mutant Chronicles (the $10
big box of minis)) and had assumed I'd use those figures, though I wasn't sure
with what rules. (I might throw in my Epic scale Knights as well, since they'd
fit in OK as robots.)
But in hearing how people like to include vehicles and such into these kinds
of things, I wondered whether I'd try to use my Epic infantry figures instead.
The idea of setting up a really small terrain layout on the kitchen table
appeals to me, and I could use the trees and stuff I've already gotten for
that scale. I'd glue the guys to washers to weight them on the bottom and help
hold them up. I'd just need to paint them bright colors so I
didn't miss any. :-) Vehicles in this scale are a _lot_ cheaper
than they'd be for the full scale, and I already have a bunch. I'd switch from
inches to centimeters, basically increasing range, since the figures change in
scale more than the factor of inches to cm.
I figured I'd start off trying to hack up rules in Critter Commandos,
since that's the only outdoor (non-gridded) rules I've got. Since
I've got Legions of Steel, I could also start off with the downloadable
Planetstorm preview.
For future reference, however, does anyone have any comparisons of Stargrunt
II with Planetstorm? I'm interested in ease and speed of play, and in fun. I
want a basic level of realism (no running across the open waving a sword at a
guy with a big gun), and reasonably easy to balance. Oh, and customization, as
well. I won't try at all to figure out what GW did with the figures in 40K (I
play Space Marine but not 40K), but I would like to easily assign values to
the figures. (I'd like to have points, but I know SG2 doesn't have them. May
not be important.)
Thanks,
Below is a list of stats that I use for Stargrunt II, when using my Warhammer

Out of curiousity, how much table space do you use for the average game? I've
hardly touched SG2. I have tonnes of 15mm figures to paint for it, but there
always seems to be something else to paint before them. I have some old Warty
40 figures, though, and I might dig them out to play. The only problem is that
they look like they'd use up a lot of area for a good game.
Allan,
I have to admit that space may be a problem with Stargrunt II and 30mm
figures, but I have a large amount of figures thanks to my ill-fated
expedition into GW land. I use a 4' x 8' table for outside battles, but you
can use a kitchen table for indoor battles. I have a lot of interiors thanks
to Legions of Steel and 2 Siege of the Citadel games.
If you want 30mm Mecha, look in Kay-Bee Toys for 7" Exo-Squad Robotek
figure packs. I have bought several for $3.99 US each.

Well, 4' x 8' isn't too bad. In fact, it's what I used when I played WH40K
(back when it first came out as Rogue Trader, and kind of sort of worked).
When people were saying that SG2 required too much room for 30mm, I assumed it
needed something like 6' x 12' tables. I'll give this a try. The game will
have a lot of close terrain to keep the ranges down.

I play SGII on a 6'x4' table and have plenty of room when playing the long way
(The two base edges are the two 4' sides). I just make sure there is enough
terrain to keep the amount of time being suppressed to a minimum until the
units get closer to each other, but not too much that a smart player can't put
a support weapon or two to cover almost the whole length of the battlefield.
(BTW, I use 30mm figs, GW and Warzone)
