I must confess my ignorance in this area, even though this mundane's main
interest in military history has always been naval, I thought 'squid' referred
to sub guys, though I've heard plenty of other nicks for them.
Several are un-repeatable here.
On the other hand, I guess serving on the Pegasus is about as close to
being a flyboy without actually being an aviator. ;->=

Squid = Any sailor as opposed to another service Bubblehead = Submariner
(because submarines are just steel bubbles) Airdale = Navy flyers (dogs with
the word air in it) Skimmer = Surface ship or sailor (they skim on the
surface) God = hydrofoil sailor, of course.
We will be having a test later in the course. :-)

Ok, I should have said 'I HAD thought 'squid'...' I'd already got the message,
guys.

Natch, another place I'd gone awry. I HAD thought this referred to the deck
crew.

God = hydrofoil sailor, of course.

Actually... I have never heard pilots referred to as airdales, only the
enlisted flight deck crews or those enlisted who went up for the ride.

Plane wanna-be. :)
In the Coast Guard the black shoes (surface) call us aviators Airedales as
well.

Might have just been me. My rule of thumb was if they wore wings, they were
Airedales. however on a birdfarm, you guys may have been more specific.

Navy canned the brown shoes back in the late seventies, about the time I
enlisted. More then a few old brown shoes got fired off of carrier catapults.
My last home port was in Key West, across from the Coast Guard base. Those
guys did a lot of good hard and dangerous work.
