THE HELMSMAN SERIES, is a multi book entertaining space warfare read. canot
remember the authorat all.
THE DOWNBELOW STATION UNIVERSE of CJ CHERRYH is a VERY entertaining series of
works that details space warfare and trade among other things.
WE ALL DIED AT BREAKAWAY STATION, author un emembered, is an EXCELLENT book
about the desperate defense of a FTL COMMUNICATIONS RELAY STATION.
DAVID DRAKE"S FORLORN HOPE and ACROSS THE STARS are interesting. the first is
a ground combat novel, with marooned mercs fighting for survival. and the ther
is ULYSSES IN SPACE or SHIT THAT HAPPENED WHILE I TRIED TO GO HOME basically.

Bill Baldwin. I really enjoyed the first three books, but the series quickly
degenerated after that, particularly "The Defenders" which was a blatant WWII
BoB ripoff, right down to Churchill's quote about the RAF.
I NEVER KNEW THERE WERE MORE THAN THREE OF THEM.
The Helmsman, Galactic Convoy, The Trophy, The Mercenaries, The Defenders, and
the last one, whose title escapes me because it *really* sucked.
My friend heard a story (rumor?) that Mr Baldwin stopped writing the series
after an argument with his publisher. It seems that as Wilf Brim (the series's
hero) rose in rank, the nearer to "flying a desk" he came. Well the publisher
didn't want Wilf to "fly a desk". Mr Baldwin thought that idea was nuts. (I
don't have any details of the
contract/agreement) So they sat there. He waited for the contract to
end, and moved the series over to a new publisher. He is supposedly writing a
new episode to the series, and the new publisher should be getting the books
out soon.
Any confermation of this would be greatly appreaciated. 8D

If that is the truth, I certainly hope he "returns to the roots of series" so
to speak. The last book just plain sucked.

A recently published book: "Oceans of Space", has another short story
following Mr Brim. Short, but good.

I let my friend borrow it... I picked it up in the "new arrivals" section of
my local bookstore, about a week ago.
Sorry. I will get the info as soon as I can.
