Oh, sorry. I didn't realize what it was you were asking exactly (suppose I
shouldn't respond unless I do! Poor wisdom on my part!). I am not that great
with Russian, but was able to hang out in Russia for several months in 95
taking a language course and doing some military historical research in
Moscow. I lucked out and was finally able to locate an excellent
Russian/English-English/Russian military dictionary recently. If I can
actually be of any help in the future, please let me know. I will do what I
can.

Subject: Some FT questions

Does anybody have any idea what the stats for the Nanuchka I -
class frigate would be in the FB design system? I've got a bunch, and ESU
Naval Command just said they're obsolete. It would be nice to have an
'official' design for that particular mini. What does the ESU ship name prefix
(VKK in romanized Russian) come ut to
be in Cyrillic? And Russian speakers/readers out there?
Jon (GZG), any plans for 6mm ESU infantry? How about ESU
6mm/25mm
vehicles? Or do they procure their vehicles from the same corporations as
other nations? Even good communists can buy things from capitalist running
dogs, they just don't have to like it...as you can see, I'm curious about
the future of the ESU lines - any new 25mm stuff planned for them?
Another suggestion, on the 'Lazy Mans Cammo' thread, how about decals of the
national emblems, in a few sizes (6mm vehicle roundels, 25mm vehicle

markings, 25mm troop insignia & starship-scale hull markings)? The
starship hull ones would be really nice...
Somebody on the list mentioned that you can get blank decal-type
shhets,
and run them thru a laser printer? Is this true/feasible? It would be
great, and I could make my own hull markings; just need a Cyrillic font
(anyone?) and translation help (anyone?).

Yep, it works fine. You can even use a colour copier and get markings, like I
did for my Federation fleet (all the nacelle stripes, etc.). The ink is not
completely opaque, however, so a light background is a good idea. Can't help
you with a Cyrillic font, sorry...

I agree with the points that Noah made (colours, accelerations, fuel, etc.),
and have been working on
Langston Field rules for a while -- very intermittently,
though, so don't hold your breath...

The Field itself is fairly straightforward, although complicated by things
like the Motie expanding field; the damage system is less so, because you have
to allow for
burn-throughs (before Motie superconductor) -- how much
energy does one of those dissipate? What effect does it have? Where do the
threshold checks come? And so on.

That's 12 and 13 _hours_, and they're only talking about
going anywhere in Known Space, which is roughly 60
light-years across. So, the Quantum II hyperdrive can do
about a light-year per minute, but it still takes 12 hours
at sub-light speeds to leave and arrive at a planet.

At that speed, a Q2 ship could cross the galaxy in 70 days; from Earth, it's
possible to get anywhere in the
galaxy in just over 49 days -- or, rather, it would be,
were it not for 2 things: i) the radiation zone at the centre of the galaxy,
caused
by all the closely-packed suns going nova, and
ii) the need for a live pilot to navigate the ship around all the stars. Get
too close to a gravity well, and you disappear. Unfortunately, you can't use
computers to fly because the mass detector requires a living brain to work,
and flying at that speed is very tiring.

For other details, read "At The Core" and "Ringworld". And
the ship may also be in "The Ringworld Throne" -- can
anyone confirm?

Phil, using ESU and some home-made stuff to make a
representative EoM fleet.

Noah, I'd suggest laying your hands on some Walther's decal paper. It's made
for laser printers and come in 8.5" x 11" or 5" x 8". You can find
them at http://www.walthers.com; search their catalog for Decal Paper.

Hope that helps,

I didn't see any other follow-up, so I'll step in with my
third-of-a-century old Russian studies.

I've forgotten how Russian does Europe, but if it's merely an 'eh' sound, then
E is correct. Otherwise, either a backwards N for long e, or backwards R for
the 'you'.

States would be, I think, shtati, and that would be a flat bottomed W with an
extra upright.

The last C works, for soyuz, the Russian for union.

I think I still have a text around; I'll muck about for it later. Not a clue
what the word order would be(Russians MIGHT change that.)

Whoops, I was trying to transliterate ESU. B is indeed the Russian V. You may
have noticed Vostok being BOCTOK in old space craft models. K is K.

Thanks, Gary, for setting me errant ways straight.

A Russian/English military dictionary? Ooooh, that could come in handy.
I'll come up with some questions.
