Here's a question for the group at large: What do most of you do about ships'
small craft (shuttles, captain's gigs, etc.) when you are designing your
fleets.

Do you:

A) Assume that small craft are already included in the "Hull" requirements,
but can have no effect on combat.

B) Assume that ships without mass devoted to hanger bays and the shuttles
themselves don't have any small craft at all.

C) Require all designs above a certain size or which do not have
stream-lining to include hangar bays and small craft.

Generally, yup.

I do the 'A'.

Given everything else, we tend to generally assume option A.

Time to be the heretic again...

Option D Assume that all ships have the ability to dock with one another. No
small craft unless the ships have a hanger and the small craft are built as
very small ships. Why? Sea going navies need small craft to transfere personel
and goods because it is dangerous to put two large ships together while at
sea. The worst the sea conditions, the more dangerous this is.
 In
space, you do not have this consideration. There is no reason why spaceships
can not dock together. It would not be something that would be done in combat,
but in non-combat conditions, there is no reason not to.

Actually, I am far more concerned with ground-to-orbit interface
capability, unless you assume that most planets have transit stations, or
ships are equipped with teleporters.

Transist stations. Otherwise you have frieghters with areospace shuttles, this
makes for very expensive (read un-profitable) merchant ships. Afterall,
how often are those shuttles going be used during the trip? Only at each end.
The rest of the time they would just sit idle... If you have transit stations,
those shuttles would be used for every non-atmospheric ship.

I always assumed that ships had interface shuttles (I thought that I read this
somewhere, but was unable to find it), but that the shuttles could not have a
mass greater than 0.75 mass (so that the hanger and craft together was 1 mass)
and thus could carry only about 0.10 mass. This is enough for courier
exchanges and small trips to a planet, but not enough to carry a meaningful
part of a crew in one trip.

As for merchant ships, ITTT specializes in contracts with start-up
colonies that do not have the resources or manpower to build, man or maintain
a
Transit Station. See http://members.xoom.com/rlyehable/ft/ft25/gov.html

Otherwise to serve these communities, the freighter would need to be Fully
Streamlined (much more expensive). See

The B5-EFSB has rules for shuttles. I find them to be VERY workable.

Essentially they work like single fighters with 2 damage points.
