Speaking of ships....
Recall, if you will, Battle Beyond the Stars...
Anyone remember the mercenary cruiser used by Geld? Or the hauler used by
Cowboy? Or the funny ship the Hero (John Boy Walton) flew around in? All
fitting fare for minis.
Or some (reasonable scale) not-Viper and not-Raiders which
cleary are not from Battlestar Galactica... (grin).
I've seen some nice Battlestar minis... good for a giant CV in FT. But the
fighters are still lacking.
Tom.

I keep hearing Richard Thomas droning his disastrous attempt at epic narration
as each ship flames out... *shudder*
Seriously, didn't we discuss Zed's Pride, or whatever it(sic) was called last
time Jon's Combat Babes came up?

They are not bad, but I wouldn't mind seeing a custom crafted
not-viper. And the not-Raider, both good ideas. Someone made
minis of these, but they are 1. way out of scale for FT (too big) and
more irritatingly 2. out of scale to each other - the viper is way
big with comparison to the raider.
Now if only someone made a base-star in a reasonable scale.... the
only ones I've seen are big plastic models.... which are planet sized or gas
giant sized in FT....

Hmm... heard the name, never seen the show to my knowledge.

Heh. I was also thinking that one of the TuffleyVerse fighters did look a
*little* like a Raider -- it has a disk-like portion to it, anyway --
but
it'd probably be smaller than the not-Niall, which kinda kills that
idea.
Digging out the Geo-Hex catalog, I think I'm thinking of the NSL
Wespe-class fighter, but the photocopy isn't all that good. Anyone?

Got the model, tried to work out it's size once proportional and it was just
too big for play. Then I thought, well maybe there should be star bases that
are so big that a fleet attack would be really tough to manage.

The latest catalogue from Comet states that all their SF Minimetals are being
re moulded, and are temporarily out of production. They hope to get them all
out again later this year

_It_, actually -- they only made the one model, of the Liberator
(naturally), in the "Corgi Junior" range. Not too bad, except for all
the text moulded into the main hull -- "Corgi", copyright info, etc. --
which is not easily removable. The weapons pylons aren't right -- too
thick, with heavy reinforcement, but accurate ones probably would have
bent too easily -- but overall, it looks okay and is a good size for
gaming, and isn't too hard to drill a stand hole into.
Of course, the initial release wasn't helped by their decision to make
it in non-authentic colours -- metallic turquoise and bright yellow
("It's for little kids; they like bright colours!" <groan>) -- but
later releases were in white, and at least the drive sphere was the right
colour, so repainting wasn't too much of a problem.
I remember designing the Liberator (and its destroyer-sized
counterpart -- wish Corgi had done one of those, and a Federation
Pursuit Ship) for Alien Space....

Yeah, you can make a reasonable-looking not-Raider from NSL heavy
fighters by cutting off the nose, leaving the elliptical section. Not perfect,
but comparable to, say, using Star Tigers as StarFuries <g>.
Add me to the list of people who want Jon, or Nic, or _someone_ to do
not-Vipers, and I wouldn't mind some proper not-Raiders either.
I can't help thinking that matching fighter scale is not all that
important -- the darn things are so small, anyway!
> Now if only someone made a base-star in a reasonable scale.... the
Well, Irregular make a not-Battlestar (as distinct from Comet's
Galactica -- which seems to be based on that *&%$£! Monogram kit, and
is thus of very dubious accuracy), and I kinda wonder if some of their
"UFO" minis could be combined to make a not-Base Star. I'll have a look
at Salute and let you know.

Is it white, with three legs (weapons struts?) and a bulbous green dome or
semi sphere at one end? If so, I actually have one of these somewhere.

Sounds like I have the right one!

Um. If you saw the viper vs. the raider I've seen, the raider is
probably 1.5"-2" across, and the viper is about 3-3.5" long. Not in
scale. The raider is a fairly large disk relatively in the shows. It
is after all a 2-3 man ship.

Seen it, it was what I was referring to.

That would be interesting. The battlestar is a nice fig. If someone would do a
basestar and some fighters, it'd be 1980 all over again...
...and Dirk Benedict would still have had the coolest role....

Hmmm. Could this be because England is populated by expatriate Aliens? I
wonder. Mr.Tuffley does seem to have a preoccupation with games of conquest
and little space ships......

With all this talk of old mini's, I decided to have a dig around the back room
& found a box of.... original StarBlazers ships. An entire fleet of them.
Still on the plastic sprues. Unfortunately, they currently belong to my
housemate, so I'm going to
have to _acquire_ them before I can assemble & paint them; and no, you
can't have them!

Yep. that's the one. Can you guess which end is the front? <g>

'Struth, if you've got any _shillings_ (as opposed to schillings <g>),
don't _spend_ them, sell them. Coin collectors are likely to give you
more than "face value" (5p) for them. Then, with current money, you can get
more minis.
> I can't help thinking that matching fighter scale is not all that

No argument. I was really referring to fighters the size of the GZG
ones. I don't think that there's much point in expecting not-Vipers to
be exactly in scale with not-Raiders at that size, particularly if the
Raiders are converted from Wespes; the good guys would be almost
impossibly small -- hard enough to _see_, let alone paint!
The Comet ones... well, that is a problem. Either the Vipers or the
Raiders can be used with, say, the Monogram Battlestar and/or Base Star
kits (if you have a big enough table/room, but together... no. And the
Monogram models have the same problem; the Viper is around 1/32, but
the Raider is more like 1/48.
Phil, wishing that manufacturers would get over the
size-it-to-fit-the-box mentality....

otoh, pretty much every alien planet in star trek looked like part of the

reproduced *exactly* in the vancouver suburbs. could it in fact be that the
entire planet is simply a training ground for alien astronauts? it'd explain a
lot.

Well, I would only go as far as 'usable', though the Terran Comet attack
craft, with a little filing and putty, WOULD make decent
Vipers. Scoutship-sized, mind you.
I recall thinking years ago trying to take the Avian attack craft and do Star
Wars TIE fighters.
I have a resin Battlestar picked up in a Colorado sci-fi(sic)
convention that was part of one molded piece that included much larger scale
raider and even larger Viper. Sounds very like the
ones mentioned awhile ago, though this was obviously a knock-off
of non-licensed.... Well, I didn't know better all those years
ago. ;->=
