I have a spreadsheet which lists all the ship class dispositions from FB1. The
numbers show "dangerous ships" to be on as well as popular export models. Not
being a naval type I'd like to know what Decommissioned and Reserve actually
mean in the context of FT.
When a ship is decommissioned is it sold off as scrap? Or to another power
(corporate, small nation, etc)?
When a ship is placed in reserve is it a combination of moving it to training
status or mothballing it around a station or a lagrange point?
About vessels sold -- can I assume these sales are to friendly nations.
Or do these sales include private concerns as well?

As there is a separate notation for sold to other powers, that would be
sold-as-functional. I've always thought decommissioned could include
broken
up, pieced out, moth-balled with weapons removed, etc.

I somehow got the idea that the reserve fleet had functioning ships,
similar in concept to the US's increasingly mis-named reserve units.
Whether these could include internal security, training,
moth-balled-with-systems-intact seem speculation.

The 'fluff' always assumed that private concerns would be restricted as to
the size of combat-capable ships. They might buy frigates and the like,
but a cruiser would seem right out.
Natch, these are mere opinions, and I'm delighted to have fuzzy areas in the
'lit' to get to keep my opinions as my own.

In wet navy tradition, "Sold as Scrap" is termed either "Scrapped" or
"Broken Up" ("BU").
When sold (or given, loaned, etc.) as a whole vessel for continued use rather
than recycling is termed "Sold" or "Transferred".
"Decomissioned" means prepared for long term storage/preservation
without crew and with the possibility of future use, including future
refitting with new systems.
"Reserve" means with a skeleton (caretaker) crew and minimal operation, but
can be brought to full active status with naval reserve personel (who train on
this vessel during their active periods).

Decommissioned means either scrapped or kept around as a hulk, or a target
using for live-fire exercises. Basically, it is no longer a going
concern as an operational vessel (though might be good for training crews to
repair

Not FT as such, but this is one of the areas that we address in Power
Projection: Fleet. Each year (in a campaign) you have an overall budget (based
on the economic value of systems you control or in the quick and dirty version
based on the cost of your original fleet). To keep each ship operational, you
need to spend 10% of its original value per year. If you can't, then you
either mothball ('place in ordinary') or scrap the vessel ('pay off').
Mothballing means maintenance drops to ~1% of original build but the ship can
be returned to service in ~10% of new build time. If you scrap a ship, you can
sell it to another
power/corporation etc, but it still has a maintenance value based on
it's original cost.
I guess that FT will operate somewhat similarly.

LOL! "I can neither confirm or deny that."
