In the near future I intend to make a 'ship bits' file available for Power
Projection so you can build your own SSDs. The question is what formats are
best for you all..?

Bitmap - I was going to use LZW compressed TIFF.

Vector - Encapsulated Postscript (EPS) probably backdated to version 7
Illustrator compatibility.

Anyone got any strong objections/opinions?

PNG is probably more generally usable, and patent-free.

Personally I'd love pure postscript, but I'm well known to be perverse...

Was Greek to me.

If it doesn't open automatically with Winzip, and I can't manipulate with
Paint, it probably won't do me much good.

It's fairly easy to convert in an automated way from the standard

Always! I've got Photoshop 6 (semi-legally...) & GIMP is always free,
but there're lots of folks out there still trying to manage with whatever

The main problem w/ Paint or whatever it's called is how few file types
it can handle, really.

What's this Windows thing? Aren't they in houses? ;-)

What formats does Paint handle? I'm not doing BMP *shudder*.

Anything that can be used in Paint Shop Pro will be great.

In Win98se: .bmp (sorry...), .jpg/.jpeg, .gif.

It *will* open.tif as well, if you tell it to display "All Files" first. Can't
handle.png, though. Forget any of the more exotic formats. I'm pretty sure
Paint will only save in.jpg,.gif &.bmp.

Anything wrong with.gif format? Granted.png is more elegant &
copyright-issue-free, but .gif does work.

Thanks..

AFAIK I don't have any copyright issues with GIF as ISTR that Adobe settled
them..

Mark,

I'm runnng MacOS X with Illustrator 10 and Photoshop 7 as graphics
applications. My only access to Windows is a modified version of NT4 at
work, which has MS Photo-Editor on it (yuk!). I've not got a *clue*
what PSP handles but I *think* it takes GIF and TIFF *and* EPS because that's
what Andy Lilly was using to take the EPS files I was generating and generate
them at the resolution and size he wanted for Quark to layout PP:F.

I'll look at the TIF and GIF file sizes and make a decision from that. EPS
will also go up, if only because I know that's what I would look for and I'm
sure I've seen a FT ship bits file in that format.

Cheers,

I can always run some conversions once you've got a stable file...

Yahoo! I'll take it however, but something Illustrator CS on the Mac can use
would be great! If you decide to do a mainly Windows format, I'll live
with it - should be able to import it.

Providing it in a vector format would also be a concern- that way when
one scales the symbols ones can end up with a better looking final product.

I think that Paint Shop Pro can handle most "vector" formats. So I think I'll
be OK.

Hi Kevin,

I'm using AI 10 and PS7 on OS X here for the graphics, so vector format for
Adobe isn't really a problem. To me, it's preferable. The v7 comment is mainly
because we found that Quark 4 would import that reliably!

Sounds great to me. This is one of the justifications I can put on my list
why purchasing a G5 DP machine was a good idea (okay, this one came 2+
months after getting it).:)

Even better, although it really has nothing to do with Power Projection, I
start in about a day back at new technology Macintosh Application development
full time at a staff position! YES! Yahoo! Patience pays off! It's been over 3
years since I've bee a full time staff developer (contracting has had its
issues these past few years). Sorry for the diversion...I'm just SO happy!:)
