Subject: SGII what genere do you play

Hi, Just sent the order out to Geo-Hex for SGII, Heard so many people
on the net talk about it I just had to try it. BTW I would have gotten it
anyway I own all GZG's other games. Curiously I haven't seen much disscussion
of SGII on the mail list, I know it for FT but Dirtside II has a pretty good
following here. So to start discussion I am posing the following question.

I've heard that SGII is, like all GZG games, very adaptible to other generes.
What generes do you play SGII in, your own, or a conversion of other popular
gameing universes? Why not tell us about them.

A second question, I have not as yet commited any money to 25mm Sci-fi
for SGII. I'm thinking of getting some of the official mini's for the game and
using them in my own Universe. I tend to like realistic looking figures. What
I want to know is how do you rate the GZG figures for SGII. Which of the
nationalities do you like the most. And what are the comon paint schemes for
them.

Thanks Hopeing to be playing SGII by the weekend. JNoll

I play in the 40K universe. Contrary to popular belief, the 40K universe is
well thought out. The wealth of background information given in RT makes it
easy to assemble platoons for any of the races mentioned there.

I've given Bolt Guns a low rate of fire (1) but well hard (d12) impact. Only
good troops (Marines at 75% Vet 25% Elite) can make any use of them. have to
get real close to hit anything.

Las guns have a high accuracy (3) but poor impact (d6). It helps make up for
the IG low skill (25% 60% 15% Green Regular Vet).

Shuriken Catapults are just flashy Gause Guns from the core rules. In the
hands of guardians they are good, in the hands of Aspect Warriors they are
deadly.

Most troops can be sorted into the three basic armour types. Marines are
classed as regular movement, but with d10 power assisted personal armour. They
don't get all the nifty benefits that full 'powered armour' does.
Terminators get d12 power armour, all the benefits, but only slow (6/d6)
movement. Their Elite status and Storm Bolters (2/d12) ensure that they
spend most games pinned, if their opponent has any wits.

Medics suddenly turn out to be one of the most valuable troop types in the
game.

> A second question, I have not as yet committed any money to 25mm Sci-fi

I've got two lots.

NAC Marines. They wear partial body armour (chest, shoulders, fore arms, front
of thighs, knees and lower legs) and a visored 'tanker' helmet. Their standard
firearm is a bulpup style rifle with under barrel grenade launcher. I've
painted these guys drab green, though in photos they are often depicted in
camouflage. They also include the most impressive female models I have ever
seen. Full body armour, correctly proportioned, (ie no huge bazukas (one does
have a SAW though)) yet still clearly female.

FSE Colonial Legionnaires. They wear what looks like a NCBW suit with a armour
breastplate. Oversized helmet (similar to the modern US helmet) and carry a
weapon similar to the HK rifle that keeps changing it's name. (You know, the
one set up for caseless rounds). Some wear goggles and a face mask.

Although the ones I saw at Ragnacon were painted up brightly in blues and
whites, I'm going to paint mine green. Those that have caps (What do you call
those Gendarm style caps?) will have blue (or white for officers) caps, but I
want them to look like they mean business, so it's dull down for camouflage
time.

Also available are ESU troops who look 'top heavy' as the helmet is often the
only piece of armour they wear, and NAC panzagrenadiers who wear full
(unpowered) body armour. IF and 'African' troops are also out.

Power troops are available for NAC (If I told you that they looked like Zippy
of Rainbow I don't think it would help any), ESU and NSL. Apparently it is
unlikely that any other groups will get powered armour. This will probably be
written into the background at a later date as the ESU selling their power
armour to other parties.

Resin vehicles are available for all sides, but you don't have to stick to
whats written (You can give your ESU team a Paladin if you want, even though
'officially' it is an NAC vehicle).

That help any?

An excellent source of low cost minifigs is the new Warzone game by
Heartbreaker. I am using the Imperial Blood Beret and Regulars as troops. The
Blood Berets make excellent Commandos!

Has anybody else gotten these garbled messages? I've seen two or three the
past couple of weeks.

This one looks interesting - could someone re-post the text if it
did come through elsewhere?

Well, I have a lot of Games Workshop figures that I bought when WH40K first
came out and I was working in a comic shop on weekends (and thus got them at
40% off retail!). In particular, I have some Imperial Guard done as mercs,
some Eldar that my wife painted, about 30 painted Squats, same number of Orks,
a set of unpainted Space Marines, about 40 painted Chaos Marines, and several
dreadnoughts (human, ork, and eldar). I'll probably use these in the next
little while.

However, I just bought (at GenCon) a number of Leading Edge Games figures for
their Living Steel universe. The Neemis Enterprises set is generic enough to
fit anything. I also have 4 or 5 boxes of Starguild and Seven Swords power
armour, 4 sets of Dragoncrest armour, and a couple of sets each of Larden and
another alien race (name escapes me right now).

I have a bunch of 15mm Traveller figures I'd like to use, but I only have 1 of
the old grav APCs and 3 grav tanks to use with them. Now if I could only find
more 15mm vehicles...

I'm pretty much disenchanted with WH40K, but I have a bunch of figures for it
already painted, so I'll probably use those right away to entice some friends
into SG2. After that, I intend to run a modified Living Steel universe. LS is
a good game, but it really only works with less than about a dozen figures a
side. SG2 will let me play with forces a bit bigger than that. It's modified
because I'm using Kryomek resin grav tanks as vehicles (Leading Edge never
released their Living Steel vehicle supplement) along with resin Kryomek
buildings.

> What I want to know is how do you rate the GZG figures for SGII.

I saw the figures at GenCon. They look quite good. However, they seem to be
true 25mm. This means that they will look odd beside WH40K or Warzone figures.
They should look just fine beside Leading Edge's Living Steel, Terminator, and
Aliens figures, as well as the Kryomek figures.

I personally like the Arab-based figures, although they all look quite
good. I can't quite remember the painting schemes used. Pretty much anything
will work in SF, though. If you want "realism" stick to some form of modern
3-colour or 4-colour camouflage. Don't be afraid to stick in "weird"
colours. For instance, do a modern US woodland cammo, but substitute some
shade of purple for brown. I intend to paint my Neemis "amphicane corps" in
urban cammo: essentially a 3-colour US woodland pattern in shades of
grey.

Our group plays quite a mixture of bckgrounds. My favourite is from Kryomek,
consequently I use a mixture of Grenadier Future Warriors, Kryomek Colonial
marines, SWATs, and Grendel Predator Armoured Marines. When I'm desperate the
GW Imperial Guard come out as two platoons of
Planetary Defence Forces. I use a mixture of GZG/GW/Grendel vehicles.
The other most used army is a GW Eldar army as one of the guys likes the GW
Eldar background. We have also mixed in Legions of steel and the
Kryomek themselves.

> A second question, I have not as yet committed any money to 25mm

The SGII figures are superb, the detail is excellent and the casting is clean.
My favourites are the NAC marines, they are very good
substitutions for colonial marine figures. The NSL troops are prety
good but armour is armour, I personally prefer the dtails found on the lesser
armoured figs.

The biggest stumbling block for me is the scale. The SGII figs are true 25mm,
hence they look very small comapred to my other figs.

I second this, it is refreshing to see correctly proportioned figs.

<snip> (FSE) that have caps (What do you call those Gendarm style caps?)

It's a Kepi

I'm not wild about the power armoured troops, the detail is good and the
figures well presented, it's just that there are so many PA troops on the
market, I just prefer the non-PA troops.
> Resin vehicles are available for all sides, but you don't have to stick
Spend loads of cash on the GZG vehicles they are superb! "Since we got
our new Paladin Hi-Mobility Battle Tank finding a parking place in the
morning just hasn't been a problem ":)

The Paladin is the epitomy of Sci-Fi tank, the Phalanx makes a superb
heavy MICV, and I'm next wasting my hard earned cash on a buch of VTOLs and
Hunter MICVs

As far as painting goes...

The Imperial guard are codex standard. The Eldar Aspects are GW reccomended,
the Guardians anre yellow and black.
Colonial marines are multi colour cam (as much non-terrestrial as
possible. And the rest are in varios stages of unpaintedness!

I hpoe this helps,

I agree, but I've managed to solve this a little bit by mounting the SGII
figures on round plastic slotted bases and covering them
with a white-glue/sand mixture. After painting the sandy base green
(with a yellow or khaki drybrush on top), the figures stand about
as tall as other GW/Heartbreaker figures. Superglue works fine for
attatching the figure to the base, but I like to add a ring of epoxy putty
around the metal base to get a sloped "mound" leading up to the figure.
