I played my first game of SGII a few days ago. Clearly, I have a lot
to learn about small-unit tactics.
I figured out one basic thing - don't let units become isolated! Other
than that, I'm somewhat at a loss. I come from an ancients/medievals
background, and the tactics for those periods are much different. Maneuver is
more important, and missile fire less important than in the type of combat
presented in SGII.
How do you prevent games from becoming long-distance shooting matches?
How do you introduce more mobility into the game without using vehicles?
What are good basic tactics?
I'd appreciate any advice or URLs for sites with good articles on this type of
information. Thanks!
Hi Steven,
Well, Urban Terrorist-101 eh?
Small Unit tactics is such a HUGE field to cover really.
Start playing your games with limited artillery and vehicles perhaps only on
one side. Add the arty and other special rules slowly; like EW and Buildings.
Some simple advice in gaming Stargrunt:
Yes, definitely have your squads supporting each other; ie have them in
positions to provide mutual fire support. They don't have to be physically
close to each other but have them in positions to put fire into likely enemy
positions.
Don't try to 'play the rules' to get kills from long distance squad by squad.
Use multiple squads to supppress a target whilst working another squad into a
close assault position. I will always recommend using two squads to close
assault with. Use detachnents to distract other enemy squads whilst
concentrating on covering your assault squads.
Use smoke to cover open ground.
Always move from cover to cover; even if it takes you a little longer.
Keep your platoon HQ well forward to see what is going on but don't commit him
to fighting the firefight. Let the squad leaders do their job but the HQ
should be in a position to act as a reserve if things get really dodgy. ALWAYS
have a reserve!! This way too you can have your PL HQ close enough to
communicate without worrying about EW or Comms rolls failing!
It always pays to put your Fire Support/Overwatch whatever you want to
call them, In Position.
That's enough to start with.
I can't think of any on-line resources right now other than the US FM
Pams that can be found through

Yeah. I'm starting with no vehicles, arty, EW, snipers, or aerospace.

I'll have to try using two squads to close assault. The first game I played
had one example of close assault, and it decimated both the attackers and
defenders.
> Keep your platoon HQ well forward to see what is going on but don't
Yeah. That was a mistake I made in my first game. My platoon leader bought it
and everything went to hell.

Thanks!
How do you deal with crewed heavy weapons? Their limited mobility seems like a
real problem.

Artillery will encourage a bit of movement, Fast VTOL's are good for flanking.
Place MUCH MORE TERRAIN this allows choke points, quick ambushes, and fire
lanes (lots of realistic war stuff)

Move to a 25mm skirmish game this tends to focus on infantry rather than the
mass movement of armour

Read my all informing tactics page on my web site<G>
oops I thought that Steven M Goode was talking about DS2 not SG2 But look at
my tactics page any way

these are indeed good urls; however, looking at the USMC 'Commander's Tactical
Handbook', i find...
"Terrain and weather are evaluated based on key terrain, observation and
fields of fire, cover and concealment, obstacles, avenues of approach, and
weather/astrological data (KOCOA-W)."
astrological data? "Well, Mercury is in Aquarius right now, so it should rain
tonight...".

ROTFL
They probably mean the state of the moon, but I like the thought of only
attacking when Mars is in ascension.
