Subject: SGII: Putting together a force

Having returned from the convention with body and soul more-or-less
intact (sanity, alas, was a definite casualty), I’m obliged to say that it was
as much fun as ever. Busier then normal, and with a disturbing amount of
sunlight this time around.

And, as always, I’ve come back from GZGECC with a resolution: Paint. Too
much damned unpainted lead and/or pewter in this house, and it’s long
past time that I started getting some more of it into playable shape.

The first order of business is a set of miniatures that I’ve had for ah well,
let’s just say that it’s been far too long. These are Ral Partha “Kurita
Battletroops”, true 25mm miniatures from the days of yore.

I’ve got a paint scheme in mind, and I’ve got a couple of primered figures
ready to act as test cases, but I’m stuck on one point: unit organization.

This is what I have to work with:
   20 Riflemen
4 Riflemen with comlinks (As standard Riflemen, but with a radio sort of thing
on their helmets) 8 Troopers with APSWs 2 Troopers with APSWs and comlinks
(Again, radios mounted on their helmets)
4 Tripod-mounted Heavy Machine Guns, each with a two-man crew
11 Troopers with SMGs 6 Troopers with recoiless rifles, each with an
accompanying loader
    6 Officers
(No armor, wearing caps instead of helmets, armed with SMGs) 8 Vehicle Crew
(Full armor, visored helmets, carrying SMGs)

No vehicles yet, but I’ll be figuring something out for that later.

But, given the miniatures listed above, how would you organize them into a
coherent force for the tabletop? Getting more of them would be nice, but is
pretty much out of the question at this point. I *do* intend to pick up

some Eureka miniatures to use as powered armor for these guys (The Mark II
Retro PA), though I've not yet decided how many.

Short Battalion, arranged as:

Command Sqd
  |
  -------------------------------
  | |
Assault Command 1 Assault Command 2
 |--- Support Sqd 1 |--- Support Sqd 2
 |--- Anti-tank Sqd 1 |--- Anti-tank Sqd 2
 |--- Line Sqd 1 |--- Line Sqd 2
 |--- Line Sqd 3 |--- Line Sqd 4

Command Squad (7): 4 Officers (convert ECM, Medic, Comms figures), 3 SMG
troopers (bodyguard),
2 x Assault Command Squads (8): Officer, 4 SMGs, APSW w/- Commlink,
Recoiless rifle + crew
2 x Support Squads (6): 2 HMGs + crew, 2 Vehicle Crew (as close
protection)
2 x Anti-Tank Squads (6): 2 Recoiless rifles + crew, 2 Vehicle Crew (as
close protection)
4 x Line Squads (8): Rifleman w/- Commlink, 5 Riflemen, 2 APSW,

In the Line squads, you probably want to convert one or two figures per squad
to carry an additional LAW for extra punch. Simply add a tube of plastic to
their packs before you paint them.

The trick with the Support & Anti-Tank squads is to remember that with
two actions per activation, you can alternate fire with the heavy weapons,
doubling your chances of penetrating (or suppressing) the target.

This is a very flexible unit structure (aside from all the heavy weapons) and
even using FP2 rifles, you max out with d12.

When you get the Power Armour troopers, attach them as Assault Command
3,
starting a new chain of command (depending on how many you order). They look
even better if you convert them with Cavalry Sabres (Nic may remember which
ones they are when I converted mine).

79 figs, too much for a single platoon, not really enough for a company.

Needs more riflemen, but meanwhile, you might try something like:

Company Commander and Sgt (two officers)

2 x Infantry Platoon, each with
--1 Officer
--2 Rifle Squads, each of 6 Rifles and 2 APSW
--1 Assault Squad of 6 SMG (use an "officer" for the 12th)
