Subject: SGII Newbie Question--repost with correct subj line

oooops! How about a re-post with an appropriate Subject line! Sorry!

Howdy All,

I am new to the list and fairly new to SGII (although I have been gaming for
over 25 years...)

I see a few areas in SGII I would like to modify to suit my taste but I have a
question about one in particular.

The manual states that a squad's Fire Power that results in over D12 for a
squad is ignored. I also noticed that most of the squads in the SGII book
tend to be only 6-8 men, so this is not too much of a problem for THEM.
But
I intend on using larger squads of 9-10+ 'men' (for Orcs and Goblins in
particular).

The first thing that comes to mind for me is to allow the Firepower factors to
'wrap' and start over for a second dice based on the squads combined
firepower. Thus a squad with 16 fire power would get both a D12 + D4
(plus quality die).

Is this 'old hat' for you SGII guys or do you use a different method? Or do
you guys like the D12 limit?

Thanks, R. Scott Clinton "Spreading the word of SGII in the hinterlands of
Texas"

PS Has anyone see/used any of Stan Johansen's Miniatures?

Well, welcome to the list, and to the best science fiction skirmish game
available. (in the absolutely-not-humble opinion of most of this list...
:>)

You might want to use lower-powered weapons - given a primitive rifle of
FP 1,
a squad of 10 guys only rolls a d10. Throw in a SAW - make it two - and
you're rolling d8 (squad firepower) + d10 +d10 (the 2 SAW FPs). I've got
a couple of militia squads kitted out roughly like this.

Erk. This could get really ugly if someone ran, say, a squad of 8 w/
FP3
rifles - you'd be rolling d12, d12 (plus quality) *without* support
weapons.

I like the d12 limit - diminishing returns, or something like that. Plus
the play-balance issue.

No, but they look pretty nice, esp. the 15mm SF troops. The world needs more
15mm science fiction stuff!

ANother option: Either you can diminish the defensive die roll (i.e D8 becomes
a D6 or a D4) or you can keep things as they are but realize that your larger
squad will be able to maintain it's higher fire power for longer than smaller
squads.

By the way you are usually better off using smaller squads say operating your
big squads as fireteams than keeping them huge IF you use high FP figs for the
weapons) the more manuever elements a platoon has (nowadays that means fire
teams) the greater articulation your platoon has and the greater options yo
have as the platoon leader.
