Hi,
How do you guys handle mortar's in a game of SGII? I am thinking that two
mortars per company (at battalion level) is probably a reasonable level of
support, but with an observer at company level, with specialist equipment this
produces a dead on hit except when a 1 is rolled for observation and or
accuracy, this is usally pretty devastating to infantry.
How many actions of fire would you allow per game? How long between
re-loading/re-suply?
Are there any counter battery rules (is this realistic for mortars?)
Loads of questions, please help

I use 3 light mortars at the company level plus another 3/company at
battalion--that might be a little more than usual.

It's pretty unhealthy for infantry to be standing around in the open when the
mortars land around them, yes. Get under cover, use EW to interfere with the
calls for fire support, shoot the observer.

Reloading is quick so you must mean resupply. Mortar bombs for a light mortar
weight about 2kg each so you could carry quite a few in a vehicle, unless by
scenario design you want to limit it. Manpacked mortars would be limited,
depend on how many guys you want to assign to the crew.

That's pretty much why mortars are used. If you're dumb enough to be parked in
the open long enough for me to drop mortar rounds all over you, you're doing
something wrong anyway.

A couple, maybe 3?
> How long between
Not yet. They are in DSII, but not SGII. Counterbattery is pretty much beyond
the scope of the company or platoon commander you're playing in SGII.

bear in mind that *company* mortars are "immediate response" so your leader
can call in one activation and execute the mortar attack on the next (if I'm
reading the rules correctly).
WELL, folks i know (as well as OLD ICH) around the DFW area and about other
places are starting to use mortars more.
for many years i had 4 OOP GRENADIER mortars that i used as approximately 81mm
tubes to flush bad guys out of those "deadzones" and into the open and for
searching fires into areas suspected of concealing enemies.
these were company level weapons in my unit TOE.
i also use mortars with 40K IG at company level for largely the same reasons,
although mortars are underpowered in those rules.
for SG II would use 2-4 mortars at company level in the weapons
platoon.
and i would think of them as 50mm - 60mm minimum, but not larger than
81mm.
at battalion level, i would think of something larger in the mortar
category- at least 120mm. and i would think about a magazine-fed mortar
capable of plooping off 4 or 5 rounds before reloading. and i would have 4 of
these....
battalion dedicated "pocket artillery" support that cannot be taken away by
some other unit with a higher fire mission priority.
company mortars, grenade launchers, man portable rocket launchers and
recoilless rifles, along with the humble hand grenade have long been the
grunt's best friend for those really intense times when support
from other sources is not available.
i have used the 40K quad-launcher as a magazine fed 4 barreled
direct/indirect fire suppot weapon for many years. as a battalion level
support weapon. there is just the sheer joy of firing 6 pieces and dropping 24
rounds on top of or in the middle of TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN in a single turn
of combat.
wotever the rules, you will find light and heavy mortars, man portable rocket
launchers or recoilless rifles or both, grenade launchers, heavy and light
machineguns, being used by my infantry.

Does DFW mean Dallas-Fort Worth?
If so, please e-mail off-list. I have family in Plano
and get up there about every other month, and would love to get some gaming in
(I love my family but there's a sharp limit to how much of them I can
tolerate).

Yup.
Guess that means you better bound from cover to cover.

Well yes, but I'm only considering Battalion level mortars (British army
doctrine at the mo as I understand) so the comander has to wait till next turn
