Subject: SGII Forces Size

As I try to anticipate how big a force to create for the much anticipated
FMASk, I stated to wonder what the typical size of battle is for those who
play SGII. I know we usually play with a minimum of a platoon with vehicle
support but then we play in 15mm so we can have larger battles for the same
table size. What does everyone else play to normally?

G'day Jaime,

We usually have 5 or so squads per player, Derek will have APCs and there is
the occasional tank.

Hi Jaime,

We will generally play with a platoon (leg inf or mounted with APCs) per
player. We have found that anymore than 2 players aside with more than 2
platoons and some support squads or vehicles tends to bog down. We try to
overcome this on the table by playing in "sectors" but it can still get
unweildy unless you are happy to take quite a bit of time per turn and spend
more than 3 or 4 hours a game. Also we use as a rule of thumb that for every 2
platoons (25mm) use one 6'x4' table. Therefore, 2 platoons aside is 2 tables,
3 aside 3 tables etc. Allows reasonable room for manouvre and les tendency to
have your troops at d6 range die in the first or second
turns!!!

If you were to look back through the archives there has been some discussions
about larger scale gaming (eg rules to activate all the squads in a platoon in
one activation)which assist in overcoming the ponderous nature of one player
potentially having to wait for 16 or 20 other squads to move before he can
attempt to, for example, roll to remove the suppression on his pinned squads!?
This does not make for a rivetting game!?

We still aim for 1 or two players a side, 2 platoons on one side to 1 platoon
on the other with some support on either side. These we find can be played to
a conclusion in 2 to 4 hours which fits comfortably into a Saturday afternoon
or maybe a longish Friday evening.

We play about platoon size in 30mm (most of us have large numbers of Evil
Empire figs), a few vehicles, arty but no air support. Depends on the
scenario. We tend to go for the random encounter battles since we are not very
creative in the scenario department:) We play on a 5 foot x 5 foot surface,
but hopefully I'll make up a 4'x8' one in my shop one of these days. Eric

I usually play with a reinforced platoon as the largest unit. Usually 4 or 5
squads with an extra squad or two of specialists. If there are only two of
you, and you aren't using the quick combat resolution system, much more than
that tends to drag. As it is, the standard SG2 game tends to run over 3 hours.

I think my group is the exception rather than the rule, but we tend to play
bigger games than most of the responses indicate.

We usually play with some combination of the following:

1-2 platoons of infantry (four squads each);
0-2 platoons of size 1-3 vehicles (4 vehicles);
0-1 sections of guns (two pieces);
and various support elements.

Our table size varies from 6x5 up to 6x8.

We also play with smaller forces, but almost never less than two platoons per
side.

Our games usually take 3-5 hours to play.
