I was in the local model RR store today looking for some of that Iceland
Moss -- no luck, unfortunately. I did, however, see some really nice
"O"
scale buildings and scenic bits...all of them more expensive than I remember
from when I used to sell these things.
Having browsed the place throughly (and found some old Revell 1/72 and
1/48
scale Robotech models, of all things!) I was forced to conclude that the
place was operating with something of a mark-up. So...does anyone know
of
a good on-line source of model railroad stuff? Discounted would be
nice,
but not essential. Reliable and well-stocked is what I *really* want.
And has anyone worked with O scale model railroad buildings before? They look
to be just about the perfect size for 25mm figures, but I didn't have any with
me for comparision purposes.

These three look promising, in particular the last one:

I've gone shopping at one of the local RR shops for "O" scale stuff for
this same reason - as far as railroad modeling scales go, HO is too
small for 25mm, and O is the next one up.
"O" scale buildings are a bit oversize for 25mm, but a lot of the accessories
can be really useful.
I got some O scale hydro pylons, for example, that look great (actually, you
can dimly see a couple of them in the background of this picture:

_7.htm
They fit the figure and terrain scale quite well.
Same with things like crates, oil drums, logs, etc.
I've seen a few O scale buildings that might suit (one was a
Roman-architecture style "Public Library" that with some mods would fit
just fine) but generally the types of buildings available ("small town USA",
railroad station, general store, house, etc) and the features of the buildings
(doors, windows) are too identifyable to be generic, and a bit too large to be
satisfying for 25mm.
And too expensive...

If I remember correctly "S" scale is more scale appropriate for 25mm. Not as
common as "O" but there is some stuff out there.

Thank you! I have a lot of browsing to do now.... I'd forgotten that DPM made
their modular building kits in O scale. Wouldn't need many to do a few damaged
buildins, either!

I want to get a few stand-alone buildings, suitable for building a
scenario around (like, for instance, this kit I have for making a cardstock
28mm scale prison camp), and a good number of things that I can chop up and
make attractive ruins from. I'm hoping to find some models that are cheap,
even if they *look* cheap. Once they've been sufficently weathered, they'll
look fine on the table.

You're welcome. I notice for anyone who's interested, it looks like
they also have paper mock-ups of the building kit componenets:

These would seem to be a cheap way of answering the "how do these look next to
my scenery?" question.

It might not be the look your are going for, but I have recently made a few
structural features out of various sizes and shapes of plastic switch wiring
boxes. The company that makes the ones my local hardware store carries has a
web site with a small picture at
<http://www.carlon.com/p_SuperBlueHardShell.html> if you want to see
what I am talking about. They also make some that don't have the nails
sticking
out of them which are a little more expensive (~US$1.10 as opposed to ~50
cents), but they save having to cut off the nail holders, which look out of
place IMO.
When they are turned over, textured up with plastic card and bits box stuff,
and painted and weathered they make pretty good industrial terrain or starship
interiors. I haven't chopped any up for ruins, but they would be good material
for that IMO, being plastic and cheap.

One of the OLD White Dwarfs had a how-to guide for turning a roll-on
deodorant into a grav tank. They also included stats for Rogue Trader, back
when GW put How To Make Your Own Units instructions in their games.
Schoon - got any pictures ? you're the only person I know who did one.
The trick is walking through a store with your mindfocused only on shapes and
parts of shapes to find stuff for conversion.

It gets even better. You can get them as PDFs.

the stuff, but in case I find a need for it I'll be ready.
