Subject: [SGII] [DSII] 170th North American Infantry (Alexandria Lights)
Just found something I wrote up a couple months ago. See, just everyone who writes up a NAC outfit goes with Brits or Canadians. I wanted to do something different. 170th Infantry is an old Virginia National Guard unit that got stood down about 10 years ago or so. I'm assuming that, like during WWI and II, the various regiments during the Solar Wars expand past their peacetime strength by adding BNs in great numbers, and that older, decomissioned regiments are brought back as well. In 2079, the 170th NAI(AL), as part of the New Anglian Light Infantry, has 6 Batallions. 1st BN is part of the 1st "Stonewall" Brigade, 29th North American Infantry Division (Light), which was activated during the ramp-up for the SSW. 2nd BN is a Territorial BN serving on Earth. 3rd BN is recruit depot and training. 4-6th BN are part of the 170th Infantry Brigade (Provisional) (Riverine) on Cromwell, a planet settled by dissidents who wanted nothing to do with the NAC, but who came back in order to get a garisson force to deal with bandits and raiders. Cromwell's settlement pattern concentrates nearly 85% of it's population within 5 miles of a network of rivers which empty into the Great Delta, a morass of swamps and jungle which are infested with bandits and river pirates of great variety. In other words, I had some Vietnam War riverine stuff and wanted something GZGish to do with 'em. Stole much from the NALI writeup by Adrian Johnson. I wanted something that shows how this TO can be tailored for specific missions. 170th Inf BDE (P)(R) 3xLight Infantry Batallions (4/170, 5/170, 6/170) Cromwell Aviation Group 4/158th Cavalry 1st Cromwell Riverine Group 2nd Cromwell Field Artillery A/6/75th Infantry Regiment F/276th Engineer Light Infantry Batallions: HQ Company HQ Post (5 Officers, 15 ORs) Lt. Colonel CO, Major DCO, 3 Staff officers, RSM, HQ Staff. Staff officers include Operations, Assistant Operations, and Adjutant. Intelligence Section (3 Officers, 13 ORs) Major OC, Capt 2IC. The senior Intelligence Officer commands the Intel Section, acts as the Intelligence representative in the Bata;;ion Staff, and supervises the Comm/EW/ELINT platoon, the Recce platoon, and the UAV Recce Section. Communications/EW/ELINT Platoon (1 Officer, 17 ORs) Lieutenant OC, WO 2IC, provides EW for BN and tech support to lower command level communication personnel. UAV Recce Section (16 ORs) WO OC, specialists in UAV intel gathering. This unit under Intel. command. MP Section (8 ORs) Logistics/Admin Company Company HQ Section (2 Officers, 6 ORs) Major OC, Captain 2IC. Note - the OC is the BN DCO and the 2IC is the BN Adjutant. The Logistics/Admin Company is almost never committed en masse as a company. The Company's subordinate units are parcelled out as needed, and most of the time remain out of direct fighting. Administration Platoon (17 ORs) Directly commanded by the Adjutant. Provides all clerical and administrative functions such as personnel records, pay and finance, public relations, etc. Supply Platoon (1 Officer, 32 ORs) Lieutenant OC. This unit administers the logistical system. Transport Platoon (1 Officer, 31 ORs) Lieutenant OC. This unit provides heavy transportation for BN equipment and supplies. The unit has a mixture of 18 heavy GEV Trucks. Maintenance Platoon (2 Officers, 50 ORs) Captain OC, Lieutenant 2IC. This unit provides maintenance services for all of the equipment in the BN, including vehicles, for which it operates several ARVs. This platoon also has workshop and fabrication facilities, and specialist technicians. Field Kitchen (20 ORs) WO OC. This unit can provide up to 5 field kitchen detachments so that the BN can have hot meals in the field. Medical Platoon (4 Officers, 32 ORs) Captain OC. The Regimental Aid Station provides all local medical services for the BN. It operates a small surgery, and has 4 fully qualified doctors on staff, plus a number of highly qualified medics. Several GEV ambulances are operated for the recovery of wounded in the field. Combat Support Company Company HQ Section (2 Officers, 16 ORs) Major OC, Captain 2IC. Note - the OC is the Batallion Operations Officer. The 2IC maintains a dedicated Company HQ that supervises company operations and maintains liason with the BN HQ including fire-support coordination. This HQ is usually Co-located with the BN Headquarters. The Combat Support Company is almost never committed en masse as a company. The units are parcelled out as needed. They are commanded in the field by the platoon commanders, but usually remain under BN operational control except when elements are assigned in support of one of the other subordinate units in the BN. Pioneer Platoon (1 Officer, 31 EMs) Equipped simillarly to an infantry squad, usually carries 6 satchel charges (may be replaced 1 for 1 by IAVRs) and provides combat engineering support to the line companies. Mortar Platoon (1 Officer, 39 ORs) Lieutenant OC. This unit operates 8 Medium RAM mortars, in 4 teams of 2 mortars. Each RAM is carried by a single GEV Utility Vehicle (size 1) and each team of 2 is supported by an ammunition carrier. The battery has three crewmen per mortar, two per ammo carrier and an HQ element that includes four Forward Observers. Recon Platoon Recon PLT HQ: PL, PSG, EW Tech 4xSniper Teams: Sniper, Spotter 4xRecon Teams: Squad Leader, EW Tech, Medic, Scout, SAW Gunner, Marksman 3xRifle Companies Company HQ Section (2 Officers, 16 ORs) Major OC, Captain 2IC. Section provided with two GEV jeeps and two GEV trucks for transport. Weapons Platoon (1 Officer, 39 ORs) Lieutenant OC. 2 Light RAM, 3 GMS/L, 3 HMG, 3xHeavy AGL. Much slimmed down from the standard due to lower demand. GMS/Ls are generally used for anti-boat work. HMGs and AGLs are generally left behind for base camp defense. Mortars usually move with the BN TOC. Ammo is distributed among the line platoons if the mission is dismounted. 3 x Rifle Platoon (1 Officer, 31 ORs) PLT HQ Lieutenant OC, PSG, Medic, EW, Marksman, 2xRiflemen, SAW. 3 Sections of 8 troops, each with 2xSAW. 1 squad per platoon has plasma in place of 1 SAW. Most troops wear d6 body armor. 1 fire team (3 riflemen, 1xSAW) may be unarmored and count as scouts (d8 move). This team is typically veterans and graduates of the brigade-run "Recondo" course. The platoon marksman may be attached to this team as well. About half the squads equip their point man with a shotgun. If a scout team is utilized the other half of the squad will be augmented with the SAW and 1 or both riflemen from the HQ squad and used as platoon reserve. Due to a lack of enemy armor threat the platoon's only organic anti-armor weapons are the plasma gun and between 1 and 6 locally produced 75mm disposable anti-armor rockets. These are cheaper than GMS/Ps and just as useful against bunkers and small watercraft. What do y'all think? Will detail rest of the unit tomorrow.
