Subject: [SG2] Squad chain-of-command?

Greetings, folks!

Here's a question that isn't clear from the SG2 rulebook. When you create a
Squad, do you normally designate the [potential] subcommander ahead of time as
a particular model in the unit, or do you roll randomly for a new unit
commander if & when the original one is killed?

Normal practice is to have a designated assistant squad leader from the start,
but if he is killed too (before or after the SL buys the farm) then a random
roll to see who else takes over is reasonable.

Maybe a simple die roll to see if the weapon itself is damaged by whatever
killed the gunner? Unlikely if it was a bullet, but possible if he got fried
by a plasma bolt.....

Well, in our group we generally don't. Why? We just never get to that level of
detail i suppose. However things can get messy if you do get to that detail;
in the first fire combat the only casualty is your designated 2IC...what
happens when teh Squad Leader in teh next fire combat is hit? Just gets messy
without adding significantly to the game play. FMA Skirmish would be better
positioned for this.

Raising another point though; the loss of a SAW gunner should not really
deprive teh squad of teh weapon permanently. I know in the modern Brit, Aussi
and Canadian Armies all infantry are trained in all section weapons. The
gunner goes down, then the No2 takes over etc.

OK, but this really begs the question. Do you penalize the squad for losing
the 2nd Looie if the Commander buys the farm and one of the PFCs has to take
over? It would seem reasonable to me that if both commanders are down and one
of the enlisteds is in command, that the chances of rolling good leadership
levels should be decreased...

minor nitpick here

If its a squad, then its probably actually a SGT or Cpl. Lt are in charge of
platoons, captains in charge of companys. The PltLdr will be with one

of the squads (the command squad or perhaps the SAW if you use the german
form). The Second Squad in the platoon may have the PltSgt running it (if he's
not with the LT).

Minor nit indead - especially since I left off the fact that my "squads"

Lesser Fangs, and the like.

Das ist tol. I will point out, if you are going to use such a structure for
your squads, why not call them a pack, and the squad leader a pack leader
rather than the anthropomorphic term of 2nd Looie like you did initially.

PPPPPPPBBBBBBBttt! (I mean that in the wettest way)

Can't call them packs - that term hasn't been used since early pre-FTL
days. . . .

BTW: "tol"? Auf english, bitte. Ich verstehe nicht diesen Wortverbrauch,
da ich die meisten meines Deutschen vergessen hatte. :-)
