In an effort to get us back on mission:

I recently purchased a platoon's worth of SG2 ESU figures from GZG and avoided
the ones with the "cammo cape", just because I thought that whole concept
seemed a bit contrived.

Is the ESU the only side that employs this garment? Have I just violated canon
by my decision?! Obviously, my platoon can be outfitted however I decide, but
I am curious about what you diehards think about this, if at all.

Thanks,

Alarishi (non-canon thus far) use something similar, not as a cape but
as a covering for spider holes.

Please forgive the views of a vac-head; I'm sure you'll be getting
points of view from better informed gropos. However, I am in the main an ESU
vac head.

Of course, you covered the 'Obviously, my platoon can be outfitted however I
decide' truth, but I assumed that the cape had other properties. If I remember
my ancient history (read, when I was young), the VC used
fire-resistant capes that gave some protection from napalm. Also, while
a larger target, the cape might increase the indistinct shape necessary for
good cammo. Finally, the cape would have a large surface area, perhaps useful
for discreet dumping of heat and reducing IR signature, or other uses I'm
having trouble imagining at the moment.

As for canon, I'm sure there are enough forces deployed in enough places to
allow for wild swings of variety, even in as rigid a structure as we've
imagined for the ESU.

Why? Isn't camouflage important? Isn't staying warm and dry
important? The cape helps with both. It's not super-tech and it
doesn't give any game effects.

> Is the ESU the only side that employs this garment?

They're the only ones modelled with it, and thus the only ones for whom it's
mentioned in the SG2 background fluff. Other forces probably have their own
solutions to the camouflage and staying warm and dry issues; and these
solutions may or may not be combined in one and may or may not involve capes.

> Have I just violated canon by my decision?!

Of course not. All your troops have those capes anyway. They just have the
rolled up in their packs rather than worn. Obviously they're fighting in nice
weather.
