Subject: [SG] Walking Drones and Guns

I would like to add some small (dog size), 3-6 legged, walking
drones/robots
to a SG game. The idea is that a team lets loose a number of sensor drones
into an area they expect to have enemy activity. These can be air dropped, or
walk in on their own power. The drones move stealthily and attempt to detect
enemy locations (and radio them back). My idea was to use hidden counters
until a unit is spotted. You would not know if the counter was a unit or a
group of drones moving around. Also a sniper team could carry one and activate
it to move off if the sniper is spotted (drawing fire away from where he is
actually retreating). Another use would be as patrolling sentry gun (think of
the sentry guns from alien that walk the perimeter).

The trouble is finding/building miniatures. Does anyone know of any 3-6
leg robots, smaller than human size, figures? Any in 15mm?

Anyone know a good way to kit-bash such a figure?

My fallback plan is to take a domed button and use wire or stick pins to form
legs. Then add a piano wire antennae. Don't wait for pictures, most of my
projects die in the planning stage.

Reviresco does some tracked ones in 25 mm.
Another possibility would be Battletech. They did some multi-legged
robots. Probably too big for 15 mm

Convert plastic toy insects/spiders. Remove too-obviously insect parts
(heads, wings, etc.) add sensors/weaponry from the bits box. Paint in
appropiate colours.

Try Ral Partha's shadowrun range - they released a pack with a rigger
and some drones (I can't remember if they had any spidery drones or not)
Spirit Games is your best bet for a picture of these

Also Dream Pod 9 are about to release some drones for Jovian Chronicles, no
idea what they look like

Ral Partha's Battletech range has several quad mechs, Goliath - which is

definately too big for you, Scorpion - which is probably too big (both
of which are long out of production and will cost you a pretty penny) or the
Tarantula - which might do and is a reasonable price as these thing go.

Otherwise plenty of people on the list have Tau drones, I'm sure they can
describe them

Drew Bergstrom makes a nice little 3 legged walker that might work. I have

The Tau battlesuits come with all sorts of spare plastic bits which are either
optional or not required for every variant. One of these is a
little shield generator thingy about 1/2" across that is a dead ringer
for a miniature drone. Add some aerials from wire and a couple of
scratchbuilt guns and - hey presto - 15mm Tau Drones. However, buying
battlesuits is a rather expensive way of producing them unless you actually
collect Tau.

This of course doesn't help Brian much, since he is looking specifically for
walking Drones!

Nope, sorry - they have a pack at my local game store - 1 wheeled drone,
1 tracked. The tracked looks vaguely WH40K Epic orkish.

Again, sorry to disappoint - when I played BT, the Tarantula was one of
my favorite fast attack mechs. The fig for it is way out of scale (RP never
did get what SCALE meant with the BT figs), and it's HUGE, bigger that the
Goliath fig (even though the Goli is supposed to be 80 tons and the Tarantula
25 tons).

Also from RP, and actually to scale (or close enough, originally for 28mm) are
the drones used by Union troops in VOR.

Thanks everyone.

Yea. I laughed when I finally assembled my Tarantula. I still have it. It
might be a good adition to a 25mm game (I would give it power armor stats, but
be robotic).

I will try to find and take a look at the VOR stuff you mentioned.

I looked at 40k Necron Scarabs, but ended up passing on them. With new Necrons
due to come out, I wonder if they will update the Scarabs?

It's a cool looking mech, might work with 10mm or 15mm.

They're armed, and pretty wicked looking.

How big are the 6mm Martian tripods that Jon sells? I don't know if they would
work for 15mm but they might. They would definitely fit the bill as
three-legged drones...

I just remembered: there was a six legged robot, looked kind of like a
grayhound with extra legs, in the Legions of Steel line that Global Games put
out.
Came two to a pack, and I think that Excelsior will be re-releasing them
sometime soon. They were called "Runaway Robots", or something like that.

They are called runaways, and are available now from www.Excelsior.cc. Just
drop Tom a note and he'll arrange delivery. Most of the Legions of Steel line
is available again, just have to ask for it.

If you can find a pack of Ral Partha's Riggers & Drones minis for the
Shadowrun line, they included a three types of drones, a very small tracked, a
gunned wheeled drone, and a small frisbee like hover drone.

Yeah, them's the dudes. Nice size; should be pretty good for what you need.
Tony knows, Tony always knows....

(I've just had a brilliantly evil idea for your "What Would You Like With Your
Carnage?" game, Tony. Pure, concentrated evil. Hey, are you going to be coming
up with some sort of event cards for the game?)

I've got these "Battlelords of the 23rd Century" (*sigh*) miniatures
that look like slightly oversized pumas with cybernetic enhancements --
bits of armor here and there, a sort of turret mounted gun on their back,
rocket pods
on either side -- that I've been considering using for a similar
purpose. I've been
flip-flopping between making them organic RPVs or Uplifted Pumas. Be
fun on the table, but probably more fun for FMA purposes.

G'day,

> I would like to add some small (dog size), 3-6 legged,

Use either a domed button, large flattish bead or bean bag pellet for the
body. They use thein brass rod to make the antennae (poking up from the body)
and the frame for the legs (bending half way down for the "knees". To make it
look like the legs of substance either put on a sheath of rubber or cardboard
or thin balsa or hollow out some plastic rod. This should give you something
like

   __|____
  / \
  |-------|
   / | \
  / | \
  | | |

I've left off the sheath on the legs and the central leg coming out of the
plan of the page and thus you can't see the "knee".

Kitbash. Go down to your local Rat Shack/Electronics supply place
and buy some transistors. Or cut them off of a circuit board. If that won't
work try some 4 pin ICs.
