The normal small arms in SG would be laser rifles; FP:2, I: d8.
You could mount a HEL/1 as a heavy weapon, but need to have drawbacks to
balance the extra offensive gained.
I use a DFFG/1, but it has FC:d4, I: d12x2* (d8 vs infantry) with heavy
weapon bands and cannot be used with squad fire (requires it's own
activation).
The ESU RFAC/1 uses FP:d8, I:d10*, but infantry bands & the NAC has a
version as well.

This is good advice, but I'm sort of trying to stay in theme here? Would they
require their own activation if they are not specialists?

If you're upgrading the small arms, just mix the rules a little.
Quality die + FP die (FP x figures) and read against the Heavy weapons
vs Point target rules. Minor hit = Impact x 1* Major hit = Impact x 2*
