IIRC it was actually the darlek's inability to follow him up a vetilation
shaft (where the darlek wouldn't actually fit).

OTOH the darlek's did need a separate anti-grav pad to send a darlek up
a (much wider) shaft in the earlier one set on the ice planet (whose name I
forgot).
