one of the flaws of SG close combat has been that if you have a
higher-quality trooper who rolls well, even if he's outnumbered 10 to
1, lower quality troops can't beat him. Example: a Veteran trooper
rolls a d10, result 9--a gang of Regular and Green troops, rolling d8
and d6, can't win. It has been suggested that you can shift the outnumbered
character's die down for additional opponents, but that doesn't seem entirely
satisfactory. So I suggest that the outnumbered character roll against *each*
opponent in succession rather than make one roll for all of them. An elite d12
warrior fighting d4 thugs will still probably win even if
outnumbered, but it's not as certain--or as unrealistic--as it is
currently

[Tomb] The rules I proposed on stargrunt.ca were just that - a downshift
of the defenders die. Why? Rolling each set independently seemed like too much
die rolling. You end up rolling N dice for the defender who is fighting N
attackers. It will produce the more likely results of applying mass, but it
also has no limit. My system of downshifting rates odds of greater than 3:1 as
not terribly relevant (argument: There really are only so many guys who can
get in a good position to apply
fire/grenades on one target during a close assault). But your suggestion
certainly is viable, if you like the die rolling, and definitely better than
the vanilla rules.

PS - I've added Karl Heinz to the Scalist Heresy Inquisitor's List too.

I'd play with 6mm if I could figure a way of dealing with casualties, other
than having an indicator beside the squad or keeping track on paper...

I use the following for Ogre Miniatures (6mm):

I cut a colored plastic straw into small rings. The rings are used as casualty
markers (fit over 6mm infantry nicely).

Using colored straws, you could even use one color to indicate wounds and a
different to indicate dead.

You could base the individual infantry models on tiny magnets:

http://www.wondermagnet.com/dev/magnets.html

(Items 47-49 look suitable)

And put them on steel bases (like from Geohex). If you like, you could
model "sockets" into putty on the metal bases to hide the ugly-thick
magnet.

As casualties are taken, you take an actual model of the stand (then stick it
to something metal for storage, as losing 6mm infantry figs seems like it's be
easy.

It ups the price a fair bit, but hey, you asked.

It isn't something I would do until I'm much more into 6mm gaming... but it
sure would be neat to see done.

I suppose I shouldn't mention 6mm FMAS then? (OTOH, Narns, KV, and other
attempts have rolled off my defenses, so if you want to see if your inquisitor
can get me torque'd...)

umm...why not the usual way? Base your 6mm guys either with magnet sheet or
thin washers, then put them on a washer, a steel base, a "card" of magnet
sheet. Some primer and a little ink of the unit base should keep it from being
too obvious.
